As a follow up is a question on breeding, however...should I get a rooster and hens from different sources to avoid inbreeding? I don't plan on hatching out show birds or anything but I want them to be healthy.

I know this late, but just HAD to say it!!....hahaha, yes- they are yours grandma! , and most people would be happy to get all girls..hahahahaSomeone want to explain why my Marans don't produce boys? This (these were my eggs) is the third Marans hatch, and not a single boy to show for it.I may have just jinxed myself.![]()
I like his coppering, back angle and tail set at this age. The camera makes it difficult to see his eye color, balance, width in the hindquarter, and lateral tailset. Photo #4 looks like a wry tail, but it may be up against the wire. Shank feathering adequate. I would watch his chest feathering...mine are totally jet black, not that lighter-in-the-middle color. Watch and wait!
Well the good news if she is a pullet USUALLY the mossy chicks lay darker eggs. Looks like there is some autozomal barring on the breast. I am on the fence about gender. the coloring tells me it is a cockerel but the comb is not screaming cockerel. Even good lines of chickens have to do heavy culling..... that bird would be a cull from my breeding pen.One of my black copper marans chicks seems to be getting more and more copper in places there shouldn't be. She's only going to be used for egg production so I guess I shouldn't be too worried about it but the farm I got her from stated their BCM's come from Bev Davis and Wade Jeane lines which led me to believe they were of high quality. They were $12 each and the other one I got has white wing tips. They are 3 weeks old. Hoping for some dark grown eggs so I guess we'll see in the Spring how that goes. She also has one out-turned toe which I think may be a genetic defect. She's had that since day 1.

Am I wrong or is this bird a Cuckoo Marans? I'm thinking a couple of my "Black and Blue" coppers are really Cuckoos, too.All my chicks are supposed to be pullets but I know they are sometimes wrong and if they are they say they will take back any cockerels which is good cuz I don't really want any. I hadn't heard that the mossy ones lay darker eggs. That would be nice.
My other BCM is the total opposite. Not a lick of copper on her yet.
