The white undercoat has plagued countless flocks of black copper Marans. The hens can be carrier but only the cockerel show the defect, so breeding it out of you flock is very difficult.

It is not very hard to breed the white under color and the White in wing and tail. Just go to the Hardware and buy a good sharp Axe and cull anything with these defects and in 2-3 year the problem will be gone. If you ad new BC you will have to do the same thing over again. The white undercoat has plagued countless flocks of black copper Marans. They do grow quickly and are chunky little chicks. This one has some serious mossiness going on, see all that brown on what should be pure black feathers? Not guessing sex at this age, but the comb is suspect for a pullet. A few more weeks and if she's a he it will be obvious. Are these the fastest growing breed? Can't believe how fast they are growing! I have a couple easter egger chicks of the same age and they are tiny in comparison. One of my one week old chicks is already getting her comb! At least she's supposed to be a girl. Here's her one week bday pic. Since they are fast growing I hope that means they will start laying early too?

How old are they? You have any pics?I just picked up 2 bc and 2 blue c marans. I've been reading up on this thread, but what are signs to look for when trying to figure out male or female? Thanks.
