Black Copper Marans discussion thread

The white undercoat has plagued countless flocks of black copper Marans. The hens can be carrier but only the cockerel show the defect, so breeding it out of you flock is very difficult.

It is not very hard to breed the white under color and the White in wing and tail. Just go to the Hardware and buy a good sharp Axe and cull anything with these defects and in 2-3 year the problem will be gone. If you ad new BC you will have to do the same thing over again.

Are these the fastest growing breed? Can't believe how fast they are growing! I have a couple easter egger chicks of the same age and they are tiny in comparison. One of my one week old chicks is already getting her comb! At least she's supposed to be a girl. Here's her one week bday pic. Since they are fast growing I hope that means they will start laying early too? :)

They do grow quickly and are chunky little chicks. This one has some serious mossiness going on, see all that brown on what should be pure black feathers? Not guessing sex at this age, but the comb is suspect for a pullet. A few more weeks and if she's a he it will be obvious.

Oh, and Marans is always spelled with the S at the end since it is a place name in France.

I just picked up 2 bc and 2 blue c marans. I've been reading up on this thread, but what are signs to look for when trying to figure out male or female? Thanks.

As of yesterday, I have a new cockerel, direct from Bev Davis' egg. And a dozen eggs from Little Peddler pullets in the incubator today. Kinda starting over...after having recessive white show up and now my 18 month old cock is coming out of a molt with white toe feathers and a lot of white at the base of his tail feathers. As he's aged his "halo" has turned to pretty much gold hackle and saddle. The Davis cockerel is not perfect by any means, but the egg color and substance/balance/coloring is way closer to what I want. I'll get some photos up soon.

???? Where does the line between breeding and money make sense, i was trying to buy wade jeane line black copper marans for lets say $12 to $15 each and the wade jeane were breed with little peddler now the chicks are $100. Am i getting wade jeane or little peddler? ????

Are you getting them from wade gene or little peddler? If not you are not getting those bird. They are someone else's birds now. They did t breed them They are the breeders birds who has them now. Crossing birds can bring in all kinds of unexpected problems.
