Black Copper Marans discussion thread

No, she is a nice solid black, no brown triangle or brown fluff anywhere. I do not have the greatest camera and it was a blindingly bright day.
Rinda, I would not be afraid to use either of your female at this point in the game, I would not use the male as his ear lobes are white. I would not worry about the eye color either.

Don, thank you I do really appreciate your expert opinion. But I am a little confused. I posted pictures of 3 hens, one of which has streaky-white lobes. Is that the one you are saying not to use? My rooster Big Stuff is the one I have posted about before, I have been told he is mahogany and a decent start for a flock. No white in his earlobes and good eye color, that is why I am going ahead with the two hens that have eye color issues.

Yes, I would not use any with white ear lobes, You can get by with some dusting of white as long as it is not enamel white. I like a male that has some station to him like this one.

Okay. Good enough for me. That will reduce my pairs to two instead of three.

Another question: If your pullets/hens have less than ooh-la-la feathered shanks will a rooster WITH nice feathering correct that in the offspring? Who carries what? And who passes what on?

Yes, if the male has good feathered legs he will help correct the feathers on the shank on the female. I believe to predict what we will get from a mating shape and color wise we need to know a little about our fowl. After a year or two you will be able to predict this a lot better.

Here is the hen I mentioned a few weeks ago, I'm not thrilled with her, leg feathering could be better, hackles only have a hint of copper, but body type seems OK and nothing major wrong that I can see. Those with more experience I welcome any comments or critique. She is young, not sure how young but I think about 7 months. Also I can tell she was underfed, since I got her she has really put on some weight and still gaining. My question: why is her eye two-toned in color? Is this a problem for breeding?

I got a second hen with her, better copper hackle and better leg feathering but she has quite a bit of white on her earlobe. Please confirm- that's a no-no for breeding, right?

Hen #2 with white on earlobe:
I'm a bit confused.... is this hen # 2 ???? or is this a young Roo ??? is this the one that has white streaking in the lobes ????

I have not seen alot of these Mahogany colored birds, does this Roo have brown in his wing triangle ??? Is that normal with the mahogany coloring ??? or a Wheaton trait ???

I get to join you all now, the FBCMs are around a week old now (tomorrow they will be). all are very friendly and are getting nicely feathered.
