Black Copper Marans discussion thread

I'm a bit confused.... is this hen # 2 ???? or is this a young Roo ??? is this the one that has white streaking in the lobes ????

YES THIS IS A HEN. This is the hen that has white streaks on her earlobes that I have been advised not to use for breeding. Sorry it would be less confusing if they had names I suppose... but since I wasn't sure if I was keeping them I haven't bothered naming them yet LOL.

My only rooster is the mahogany fellow above. His wing triangle is black, but the day was extremely bright and my camera is not very good, so some of the black is reflecting as brown in the sunlight I suppose because a lot of people are asking me if they have brown on them. Thanks for asking. I really do want a decent start that's why I keep posting and asking for opinions, like Don's signature line says I don't want to waste years on "junk." But at the same time this breed is so difficult to find a good start in.

I get to join you all now, the FBCMs are around a week old now (tomorrow they will be). all are very friendly and are getting nicely feathered.
I ordered the eggs off ebay and 7 out of 11 hatched, the others werent fertile

Remember clear "shipped" hatching eggs do not always mean the eggs were not fertile...there are many factor that can affect shipped eggs.

I can relate to the fact that it's hard to find good birds to start with,,, especially depending on your location,,, I have the same difficulty, but enjoy the lesser birds I have,, some have nice egg color, and I really like a couple of the roos I have acquired,,,, too bad my favorite ones usually have something major going against them.
I really would have guessed your #2 bird to be a young Roo,,, looking at it's tail feathers and long saddle feathering.

Good luck with your stock.
