Black Copper Marans discussion thread

This pullet I am referring to with the white ear is the most camera shy thing I have come across... except the Dorking cockerel. I can't get near him for much of anything unless its in the dark barn where not pic can be taken anyway.

I have pullets here who should be at pol and yet... no eggs, not even one. Its terribly cold here and only a few birds of the many are laying but I have to ask again just to reassure myself: Marans pol is typically when? I keep seeing everyone else's avatar pics of incredibly chocolatey eggs (as opposed to the terra cotta which are also lovely) and I think I have egg envy. Why the difference in terra cotta and chocolate? I have heard some of the varieties lay darker than others. Is there truth to this?
Our Marans started laying at about 8 months, which was about two weeks ago. We still haven't had many eggs from them, but it's winter so it's not a good time to start laying!

My marans well most of them just started laying and they are my best layers right now. 13 eggs from 16 hens and pullets. I still dont think they are all laying yet.

Ohio National Marans show. The judge at this show is one of the most respected Poultry Breeders and Judge in the U>S>A. I thought it was more that exhibitors didn't know what was going on and were trying to sway the Judge. If the Judge would of just removed everyone from the area there would not of been the fiasco that happened. This happened mostly because most exhibitors were new and didn't know what was going on. This behavior is normal when most start out showing.

Hey, Bill! Would you mind briefly going over what the clerk's responsibilities are? I've seen them at shows, and it appears they jot down the judge's comments as they go down each row. I've also seen them ask judges questions along the way - I assume that's part of the "perks" of clerking. I've not noticed anything in the SOP that talks about clerking, but I confess I spend most of my time in the sections for my breeds and the front 38 pages.
The clerk's basic duties are to record class placements & awards eg:class champions, special awards etc. Some better clerks will work a bit ahead of the judge to check that all the entered birds are present to indicate on coop tags & record sheets any birds that are out. My clerks always get to tote my Standard as I like to have it handy.
In many cases people who clerk are interested in the judge's apprentice program & use the opportunity to ask questions or to meet the apprenticeship requirements.
Sometimes an observant clerk will even keep a judge from making a mistake,

Ours usually start laying between 18 and 20 weeks. They lay fairly regularly and are pretty dark, but not as dark as some of the eggs in the pictures I've seen on here (I think the less they lay, the darker the eggs generally). There must be some pretty different strains of marans available.

The Show Secretary is responsible for receiving the entries and checking to see that birds are caged correctly for showing . Anyone seeing a problem in the show are to report this imediatly to the Show Secretary .
Awards , Class Champions , Special Awards , winning money pay outs and anyother decisions for the show is to be handled by the Show Secretary (and show committee when needed) "only" ____ unless the Show Secretary has charged certain individuals with any of these duties .
The Show Secretary is in Charge and Responsible for any and all All of these things in said Show .

A clerk is there to record the Judge's decisions and never to interfere with the judge's work !(a Judge is Due their Respect) If the Judge asks or engages the clerk in conversation it changes the game .... the clerk can now converse with the judge , offer explanations , answer questions and help in any way while making sure to do the duties of a clerk correct .

I'm secretary for 2 shows & I think maybe you're combining the secretary & show superintendant into one role. I'm also a judge & sure don't employ a speak only when spoken to rule with my clerks. Not sure what your experience is in these matters but it sure sounds like your experience differs from mine.

All i'm saying is Simple Respect , no matter Who You Are this should be expected (maybe it's missing in your area?i don't know and will not elaborate on something i don't know(?)just go by what you say.
Yes we would combine the two (lol) is there a rule you must have both ? I think you were combining ShowSuper and Clerk .
I see you would like to take things out of context when someone might disagree with you or touch a certain proud nerve .
Does your clerks come in running their mouth , telling you what's up ??eating a burger and drinking a big gulp while clerking?(just asking) .
In this world No-ONE(again-No Matter Who They Are) knows it all (including me) .
A show with no major errors speaks for it self and makes everyone happy . (facts are facts)

Perhaps now would be a good time for a change in subject.... How about chick photos?

Come on.... You know if you have some fluffy butts at home, you are dying to show them off....

I got TWO marans eggs yesterday. It was the first time in TWO Weeks that the girls have laid ANY eggs...
Maybe I will be setting eggs again soon. The last hatch is coming out of the incubator.
