The pure Davis (the original ones, not the ones coming via GFF) were known to be larger bodied, with that nice, "gravy boat" underline. I wonder if that's where her line originated?

The first hen is a Davis Pullet, 2nd is a Wade Jean/Pullet. Both these girls were 7-8 mos. old at time of photos.......

Sorry, I did not expand much on the pics as had to run outside ........ Can not tell you if these are good examples of the lines or not, but I can see a definite body type difference and wanted you to be able to see that too as I see them in my yard everyday :) The wade/jean pullet is the only one I have so far of this line, I do have some babies of hers growing out, not old enough to see type yet. The wade/jean I have seen at shows look similar in type to this pullet. I also have her dad and a full brother and they are not nearly as chunky as my original Davis roo but I love their type. All of my Davis girls, one original mom and her offspring that I raised last year have the type of the pullet in the pic. All very chunky girls. The Mom was bred to a Davis roo who I no longer have.

Well, this would hold true for the one gal I can't use, very deep, and the friend's who I have seen. Hers are heavy set and I love it. I really hope that my other two fill out that way. If not this friend is setting eggs and has agree to trade me for some of my R Orloffs.

I'm with you ashandvine. I am very attracted to the "gravy boat" underline. I have 7 BCM hens — 3 are pullets that are just now beginning to lay at 24 weeks. Of those 7, 3 fit this description (which is a perfect visual for me). I love the way they look and the girth they carry. The tail section almost looks heritage-like in the way the top feathers round off. One of my pullets has a very deep mahogany coloring around her hackles. There's not a whole lot there, but boy would I like to see her throw more of that.

This leads me to the question of what BCM line (Bev Davis, Wade Jean, etc.), is the closest to the SOP? I'm sure each line offers something to what we're all striving for. Being mostly a newcomer to this wonderful breed, (going in my third season) I find this somewhat confusing as I'm sure others who lurk here do as well.

Three Black copper chicks, so far, have hatched under my neighbors broody! I gave her 7 eggs just after Christmas, can't wait to see what they look like later this weekend.

Everyone has their favorites, but I always like the big full figured pullets myself. Getting that "type" and nice copper hackles is a challenge, but well worth the work. Both pullets are nice, but I prefer the big girl.

We have both lines here and use them to breed back and forth with each other. Some of our friends cringe when we say that, but it works for us. Whether it is goats, cattle, rabbits, or dogs we have always breed to produce what we like and hope that others like them too.

Looks like the weather is going to be nice around here this weekend. That is a good thing because we are planning to wash chickens and get them ready to go the Ft Worth Exposition and Livestock Show next weekend. Is anyone else planning on going to that show?

After that one, we will be taking off for a few weeks and then if the weather permits we will be going to Newnan, Georgia.

Just Wondering,
