That is called rudimentary toe. They are common in breeds with feathered legs like Marans. It is not a DQ or a fault. I personally don't like to breed them, got to be genetic too. I would not cull a great roo if that was his only flaw.
Are you sure about that? I can't imagine it's not a fault, but I'm not a judge, either.

Well 3 pretty little pullet eggs today; so excited they are laying. Now just waiting for them to lay big girl eggs so I can decide who to breed from. The pic is pretty close to real color.
First off, those eggs look huge to be pullet eggs! THey have a nice sheen on them, which sometimes is difficult to find in this breed; however, these 3 particular eggs are not dark enough to be considered Marans eggs. I mean no disrespect, but I would not breed forward from these eggs. They need to be at least a 4 on the Marans Egg Color chart in order to be considered a Marans. However, crossing the hens to a cockerel or cock bird that came from a very dark egg would darken up the eggs of the offspring. Again, I mean no disrepect, and the eggs are lovely as they sit in your hand!

Hi Wynette, The APA has a write-up on the Rudimentary toe saying it should not be penalized. Two dozen of the BC eggs we just bought have the short and I myself will not under any circumstances use them as breeders.

Hi, Don - the post was "had a nice black copper marans, but he was missing some toes"

Missing part of a toe is a 1 point deduction for each toe.

I agree with you, Don, I wouldn't use it, either.

I had a nice BCM but he was missing some toes. another one from the same hatch just never grew. I let the guy who I got them know about this and he is going to make it right. I got the chicks at a day old. gave the missing toe rooster away as a pet and the unthrifty chick just died.

tell the person what happened ... worth a try.
Delta, true - and most breeders want to know the good AND the bad in their stock. If they don't want to know...run the other way.

That is correct, but if it is any other toe it is a one point deduction per toe. It will not be a good thing in a show though even though it says not to descriminate. I don't know why it is even allowed. That was not put in on my watch.

I couldn't PM you fast enough. See above. That's what I get for using my memory and not looking something up. It is only allowed on the outer toe's though. One on each side.
