Again on the not hatching. I have one girl who loves to lay on the ground and about half of her eggs look like that.

So sorry about Daisy, she was a pretty girl. It also looks like your on your way to a nice flock there, good luck. Finally got out in the yard with the good camera today! Super excited! The older ones come from a guy named Dave Fitzgerald in Seminole, Oklahoma http://www.fitzfarmandpoultry.net/marans-eggs.html - he showed us his eggs and they were fantastic but he really wasn't too excited about them as they have faded a little since spring. They are still way darker than my current stock! The younger ones come from Ernie Haire in Texas. They are a little young to tell much yet but growing nicely. I had 5 chicks hatch yesterday from hatching eggs from Hardin Poultry in Tennessee. I will be keeping the best 2 or 3 from each batch so I hope to have a VERY nice breeding team next year! This is the biggest boy, too bad he is growing in with spots on his chest already. It's not much but I assume he will have quite a bit as he matures.![]()

The slightly younger boy is much smaller, he got sick from some bad feed and kept in the house for about a week recently. Hopefully he will catch back up. Due to the extra handling he is the more friendly of the two. Both of these are from Dave. They are Wade Jeanne lines.

Some picture of the others. There are 7 girls total from Dave with green bands but I can't tell them apart! Besides a few are bigger than the others. There are (I think) 4 girls and 1 boy from Ernie (all white bands), and one blue copper maran girl from Ernie that is super, super sweet! Some are a little mossy but I'm hoping it molts out. Almost all are getting a hint of copper.

Sorry if this is photo overload- did I mention I am SO EXCITED to pick from these guys and gals for breeding next year?!?! They've got a long way to go still so I'm not ready to pull anyone out of the running yet. On a sad note lost my sweet BCM girl Daisy yesterday. No idea why. She was from some of the first chicks we ever bought. Not very old either, only a little over a year old. Not a perfect bird by any means but she opened my heart to Black Coppers! RIP Daisy!

Thank youRinda,
We LOVE pictures! Keep them coming! What fun, seeing your new flock grow up.
Chickenman,
I asked the same question a few pages back.. I was shocked to see a couple of my chicks hatch with lots of white on their faces. Then, I was shocked again to see white wing feathers start to grow in. Turns out that both are normal.![]()
There wasn't a clear consensus as to if the white faces means anything (more or less copper or whatever at maturity).
I am taking pictures of my bunch as they grow. I am curious to see if the white on the face correlates to something specific for my chicks.
So far, the more white the chicks have on their face does seem to equal more white edging on breast feathers. But mine are only three weeks old.
Thank youtoo much white on the face seems to mean they will.be over colored with copper. you might want to tag the chick and watch it grow out and see what you get.
