MY COCKEREL WON'T CROW
1f614.png

I am the proud mama of a young French Copper Marans pair, along w a 2nd female + 6 other hens. This pair of FCMs are very tight and exclusive - she is jealous of all the other hens! Anyway, the cockerel isn't crowing yet. He was hatched around April or May, according to the breeder. I will crow and try to get him to and he will rare back and open his little beak but NO SOUND comes out. It's so sad! Do they have to mature for crowing and, if so, what age? Are there some that just never crow? I'm attached to him now but really WANT a proud, crowing cock!
Anyone out there know??

So he's maybe 20ish weeks? I'm guessing... My BCM started. I'm guessing around 20 to 22 weeks. He will start soon enough. Mine started off practicing at first. He sounded like he was getting chocked... First there was a "eerrch" then that became "eerr errgch" both were really scratchy, but funny sounding. By the fifth day we finally got a "eerr eerr eeerrrr". Now he doesn't shut up! lol First in the morning and again in the afternoon. We heard on Sunday morning, in between Walter's crows, a "aaarrrhhh?" from I can only assume was our 18 to 20 week old RIR, Big Red. I think he's finally learning from Walter.

Some mornings at 4am I'm wishing none of my little boys know how to crow! Because the baby coops are all right by my bedroom (only place there was room for them where I could run electric when needed). I have 7 mature boys (an EE, 4 BCM, 2 Welsummer) along with 12 EE boys 4-6 months, a new silkie boy that is just learning and two Buff Rocks that have begun and still sound like squeaky toys! They are funny when they first get started. I'm sure your boy will get started pretty soon. My BCM didn't start crowing until the were around three or four months. The EE started about 8 weeks, but maybe because there were so many adults crowing already?

mine crow pretty early. I have one less than 3 months crows the most pitiful crow you ever heard...brings a smile to my face when I hear it.

he may just be slow in the crow department. I have a Good Shepard Barred Rock roo....never hear him crow he is almost 2 years old.

Well now I'm really concerned! Even if he wasn't born til late May, that means he is 4 months old and not crowing. Is it possible that some roosters never crow or have something wrong with their "crower"??

Hey Nashville, you're not too far away from me! That's funny about your 3 month old. I know that sickly pitiful crow from one I used to have - ha ha!
But not good news your GSBR has never crowed. Heck, I never thought about it before, but I guess all the birds are different and probably
happens that some just cant make a sound. What bothers me is how my guy opens his beak wide open and then ... nothing. NOT A PEEP.
Also, one of the Leghorn pullets chases him off sometimes. I'm afraid I might've gotten a big wussy cockerel darnit!

Ah well, as they say, ze French, zay are not fighters, zay are lovers! lol

I wouldn't be too concerned. It could take another 2 months before he starts crowing. I think a normal age range for crowing could be anywhere from 6weeks-6months of age. Every rooster is different.
