Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Quote: There are a whole lot of breeders...check signature lines on here for the variety you're interested in, and contact that person. Or, join one of the Marans clubs - there are two - and they both (I believe) have breeders' lists on them.

Aren't French Marans the ones with shank feathering? I heard from a breeder that the American Marans are clean shanked.
The French variety does have shank feathering, yes.

That was most certainly not a "breeder" if you indeed heard that comment. The English Marans are clean shanked. The Marans in the U.S. are simply called "Marans" - in the U.S., the standard calls for Marans to have shank feathering that extends down the outside of the third toe.

Georgia Marans breeders"

There is a lady in Barnesville, Georgia who breeds Maras I think her web name is Harmony Hill. She has some really nice birds. There is website info on the Net.
Best,

Hi all, I've been following the regular Marans thread but thought I'd read over here for a while. I do not think I will be able to read the entire thread from the beginning, however.
Question, I have 2 or 3 pullets that have really nice copper hackles however the copper extends to the tops of their heads as well. Mostly not on the breast, though. One has a few copper spots on her breast but mainly their breasts are black. Would these "over-coppered" pullets be useful at all in a breeding program? I am used to seeing over melanized pullets/hens that are solid black but this is the first time I've had them with so much copper. These are from a different breeder, not ones I hatched from mine. One of the cockerels I got from that breeder looks like he is too dark, would it work well to pair him up with these pullets? These are just 4-1/2 months old so I have lots of time to decide.

From the looking into that I have done, as long as the copper doesnt go into the breast the head is fine. I read somewhere that the French prefer it. They state the head and neck are suppose to have copper just like the male does. Granted not as full. Maybe a theory as to why we have such a hard time getting copper repeatedly on our hens? Please dont take what I say is gospel, but i seen a lot of videos of french show birds with it.

LOL.... That was not a breeder in the truest sense of the word or they would know that the SOP requires that the legs be feathered all the way to the toe....
The standard was approved 2 years ago, so there is no excuse for a "breeder" not to be familiar with the APA standards for Marans.

The English Marans are clean legged....French and American standards dictate feathered shanks.

There are several threads on BYC dedicated to educating folks about the standards. Try a search for them.
