Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Really to early to tell on sexes right now. Give it a few weeks. Did you buy eggs and hatch them under a broody? Reason I asked is the Blue that looks like the mom. She has a pea comb (Which Marans are not Suppose to have) and to much copper or yellow in the chest. Again not suppose to have.
Hi, thanks for the response. Yes, I said at the beginning of the post that they were bought eggs and hatched by two broodies. I love that mom's coloring, but she is not the biological mother and is not a marans. Again, as noted in the post, I am not trying to breed them and I would actually prefer more copper than the marans requirements allow. I'm just hoping for pretty hens that lay pretty eggs!

Opinions on this cockeral ???

Is his copper too close to Mahogany ?

Is there a benefit in keeping a Mahogany colored Rooster in a breeding program to correct or improve color ???
I have heard yes, they can be used to balance out color. I am going to try it this coming year, breeding my mahogany black copper over a few of my blue copper pullets. I am having trouble getting color on the blue copper pullets and the color I am getting is pale. Worth a try with a few of them I think.

From what I can see in this picture this male would be considered to have Mahogany color. The Mahogany on the Hackle will very seldom have very much in the way of a Flame.

The mahogany a very valuable when trying to breed good dark Copper colored hackles and saddles. This male also has the Dark Slate legs associated with Mahogany Hackles.

This may have already been discussed on here, but with over 7800 post I haven't them all.
Here's the question; Are all Marans poor foragers or just mine? I have 8 blues and 4 black and they are the worst foragers I've ever seen. Open all the coops in the morning and my buff orpingtons, barred rocks and Red sex link take off like a billet to get to the pasture. The Marans just wonder around for an hour or so then go back in the coop and hang around the feed bucket... What gives?

Would anyone be interested in how to breed the Mahogany colored Marans into the BC and what color of female to use with them ? Will post if there is some interest.
Yes, please share! I have one, he is a nice large male but he has some white in his tail feathers. Am I asking for trouble using him? I was planning on using him over some of my Blue Coppers but could try him over some Blacks as well. My Blue Coppers do not have much color and the cockerels all came out with lighter hackle feathers this year. The Blues that do have color, it is light as well.
