Black Copper Marans discussion thread

So I found this one breeder one time on the east coast on the internet. Now I can find them, nor do I remember their website.
I do remember that their chicks had NO white feathers …..strictly black for the BCM breed. A chick cost about $100 or more.
Does someone know of them or anyone else with this quality.

I think that you are referring to the Little Peddler (LP) line. You probably where on the Copper Hackle website. They crossed the LP line with the Cottage Hill line. The chicks didn't have any white on the juvenile wings.

I have a breeding line that hatches out chicks with out any black on the wings. I will sell you some for $100 each. How many do you want?

This is what the chicks look like.

Here is what the cock birds look like when grown out.

Hmm? I am considering culling this line. I don't have enough coop space and have two other lines of Black Copper Marans I am working on (chicken math).

I guess I never equated black chicks to quality. If you want quality, find someone with a good reputation that has been working with their Marans flock for a minimum of 3 years. Preferably someone local that you can meet in person at their farm and who will work with you to help you get what you want. Then buy 25 chicks from them, grow them all out, and when they are mature birds cull everything but the best cock and the two best hens. That will give you the best chances for quality Black Copper Marans. Unfortunately, I wouldn't give you the same odds at getting quality if you pick by down color, or blood line alone.

P.S. I got on this thread for feed back on the Cock bird that I posted (need to make the decision on whether this line stays or goes). The chick photos is of the same cock. All of the his hatch group looked the same as far as not having white on the wings. His offspring are all black when crossed to one of my other breeding line. His little brother (hatch 8 hours after him and slightly smaller but can still lick him in a fight) was crossed to a different line and produced both all black chicks and chicks with white wing feathers.

Marans fanciers please comment on this cock. I need your evaluations.

Aloha,

Heʻs mixed with something but doesnʻt show any ameraucana signs. So 50/50 on passing on the brown egg gene. White earlobe usually means white eggs? Probabl;y not an olive egger. Finding an ameraucana roo shouldnʻt be too hard(Craigʻslist). Araucana roos are hard to get. But Ameraucanas have the bluer egg. Then cross to a full BCM and you have olive eggers. I have a half BCM half cream legbar who should be laying olive eggs soon.

Question: If you mate a BCM roo to a cream legbar hen, do you get sex links?

Thanks for your reply.

The only roosters in the pen were one Ameraucana and one BCM. The moms were Ameraucanas, BCMs, Barred Rocks and Rhode Island Reds. No white egg layers...

I understand genetics of the Olive Eggers. I have Ameraucanas, BCMs, and OEs. Just trying to keep one OE roo with my OE girls, and I'm counting on this boy being an OE... But I need to be really sure that this is what he is.

Don't know what happens if you cross a BCM to a Cream Legbar, sorry!

Ok, ladies & gentlemen, I need some help here.

I hatched and raised, from my birds, this boy. I initially kept him, for a new pen, as a Black Copper Marans. But I'm not so sure anymore if this is what he is! The possible moms: black copper Marans and blue Ameraucanas. The dads: Black Copper Marans and Ameraucana.

I think he's an Olive Egger f1, but I'm fairly new to breeding and what the heck do I know?? :)

Reasons why I think he's an OE:
Yellow legs
Way too much red on his chest
White ear lobes
White feathers on the base of his tail.

If he's an OE, it will be even better than a BCM!!!! I've been searching for a OE roo and maybe I already have one... I is he just a poor quality BCM? Not sure if these are common faults.

Thanks in advance for the help!

I think he has something of the look of my blue wheaten AM's roos.. gotta say though... I like his tail :)

Uff......

I had a really nice roo..... and he produced all these mossy looking babies. So I sold him for $20 to a guy up the road who had previously admired him....

Now at 2 1/2 months all the mossy is gone, and MOST of them are lovely...

I guess rule #1.. wait at least a while before you decide to sell you roo

I have one Marana with yellow on the under side of its feet is that bad?

Yes BAD.

Yellow is recessive to white skin so BOTH parents had to contribute that gene. My guess if you have other birds related it they also carry yellow skin genes. I would not breed them...... NONE of them. It will just get worse.

Sorry for the late reply with the pics of the mother and sister of the Langshan X Maran K I posted a couple days ago.

This is the Mother, Blackie, a BCM bantam. She lays huge eggs, one every other day, and is a favorite of ours. Please critique. Its interesting to note, that the ABA Standard, lists Marans on their inactive list!

This is the cross daughter. Please forgive the poor pic quality. My digital camera still uses flash powder!

In the first picture take a look at the Wing Triangle and you will notice that it is brown, this says there is some wheaten blood somewhere.
