Black Copper Marans discussion thread

here are some of my BCMs :) they are going to be egglayers (not breeders). 3 mos old

this girl has very RED feathers in her neck (she is my favorite personality wise):

the other girl has COPPER neck:

this girl is feathering so beautifully... but she does not have any copper yet! only a couple small specks of copper.
I am interested to see if more copper comes through as she matures :)

they are 3 mos old!
I do not know, is it more desirable to have copper or red in the neck feathers? this is just for curiosity's sake, they won't be bred anyway :)

My understanding is the longer they take to copper up the better (unless they don't get any copper at all). I have pullets 8-10 months that are just getting some copper in their hackles and it can take 18 months I've heard. The cockerels that are getting copper at 4-6 weeks will have too much and are dinner-bound.

does the red ever change to copper through moulting or does the color generally stay the same?

The experience I have had is the chicks that really start to get copper early, then they will have too much copper. Usually excessive on their chest. If they start to get color at after 3 plus month, and if after 6 months is good. I have a pullet that is 12 month old and she had maybe 4 copper feathers on her neck at 8 months and now has stunning copper around her neck.

But if you aren't breeding for SQ, and just want eggs and not breeding, then copper anywhere is fine. Depends on what you want the Marans for....
