Ivy, yes, you've definitely got a cockerel there.
Enjoy your new birds!
Subscribing since I am GETTING some BCM if I have to beg borrow or steal!Seriously though, not much longer. I look forward to learning about the breed and hope to have a nice roo I can keep around too.

Yep, a good looking boyHello! I hope it isn't too much of a bother if I can ask for opinions. I picked up three French Black Copper Marans from a breeder a few weeks ago. They are between 5-6 weeks old now. The breeder was fairly certain they were all pullets, but not 100% sure. This is my first time buying straight run chicks (I purchased 12 chicks in total, different breeds). I would like to weed out the cockerels as soon as possible. With this in mind I am very new to chickens, only had a tiny backyard flock for about 2.5 years. This is my first time with Marans. I was told it might be difficult to distinguish a cockerel from a pullet, but of my three chicks one is REALLY not like the others. It has a huge red comb, and wattles compared to the other two chicks. Its legs are also much thicker than the other two. Am I silly for thinking this one is a cockerel? The one in question. I had to bribe "him" with some hard boiled egg to hold still.

And a close up of the cute little face.
This is one of the other two chicks in front of "him", just for comparison. There are no wattles and a small yellow comb. I have to say out of the 12 chicks, the three of them are very "serious" little chicks. They go about their chick business with a baring the Blue Ameraucanas and Orloffs just don't seem to have. They are a delight to watch. Thank you so much for any opinions and sorry for the silly, probably annoying question.
