Black Copper Marans discussion thread

I have two people in my family who refuse to eat backyard eggs. We actually have to buy store eggs just for them.
you're nicer than I am.

The rule in this house is you either eat what I put out or go hungry.

Critique Time..... Not the best photo, but I'd like some input, comments on this Cockbird.

Not my bird, but curious what everyone thinks about him ????

thanks in advance !
i'm an amateur at this some things I noticed:

the yellow color in the neck (sometimes it's the light/camera)

suspicious looking comb (cant see it very well)

he needs a flatter back

cant see any shank feathering

No expert at all, but what I see is a LOVELY tail angle. I'd like to see him less "scrunched" at the base of his neck so we could really see his backline. Photos from top, front and back are also helpful to give a more 3D photo "description" of him for evaluation of width and substance. Pretty sure I see shank feathering there...unable to see eye or ear coloring but would like the hackles to match the shoulder color and to see more copper on the saddle. How old is he?

Why not use a black out of blacks? That is what I have been doing, the past couple of years, because I can't seem to hatch a decent Blue Copper cockerel.

I breed based on family lines...all the females are related. That's why I wouldn't use a black out of black to do that.

That's a good idea, the excerpt. Isn't it crazy, people want local, farm-raised, not factory-farmed eggs, but then they see something a little out of the ordinary and they get the ICK factor.

i confess i get the ick factor too... but the only birds that give me meat spots are the marans.. it has got much better from a couple of years ago but i do still get them. OTOH, my egg guy says his customers request the nice dark brown ones.. and when he has only white ones left he says they get suspicious that they are not really from a local source LOL!!! for myself I eat the white ones!!

I have some with mine, they will be a year in April and it's gotten LOTS better.
It's funny, the people that take my eggs I start to explain it to and they stop me and say they know all about them. They usually had chickens in their family when they were young.
And I've got about 6-7 different people wanting eggs, and they can't get enough of them.
Usually people understand. If they don't, you can always put a little excerpt about them for her to hand out to them once.
I have blood spots with some of my 2nd generation buff orpingtons. It's not just Marans.

I have 4 BCM's, none are show quality and I purchased them from a local person who, I found out later, just resells the chicks after she buys them from a hatchery. No problem since I don't want to show, etc...but anyway...I like their eggs.

The bird in the back has always had light eyes. Which bird has the correct color eyes in the photo? The light eyed bird also has a funky comb but lays very large eggs and has since she began laying in November.

Thanks.

Tammy,

The lighter colored eye is proper. It's called reddish bay.

Thanks!

I hatched out 4 of her babies, I believe two are roos, but I'm hoping the pullet chick will give large dark eggs...the sire is a welly/easter egg mix.

This is two of them with their Australorp brood mama. They are not quite 7 wks. The one not shown is a definite roo and has a copper neck, so I assume the one on the left may be a slower maturing roo and the one on the left a pullet. Time will tell! :)
