Ray, is there a space (is there beak) between the front of her comb and this protrusion? (it looks as if there is beak between the two, is that how it appears?)

Yes Wynette,, there is just a bit of beak between her comb and the protrusion. When she was younger it seemed more "crusty" and harder tissue than a comb,,,, but, it seems to be getting a bit of pink color to it as she matures although it still seems solid.

Ray, that's freaky interesting! I've never seen this before. Any way you can get some exteme close-ups of it? I'd love to send it to someone I chat with on a fairly regular basis who is a poultry disease specialist, just to see what he thinks.

I had one with that exact same thing that I hatched from my BCM. She ended up being an early cull for several reasons. I think it is just a random deformity.

I have a speckled Sussex with it too. darn! was hoping for an answer!
GEEZ !!! First I cringed,,, then I laughed,,, guess I'm not alone ... lol ..... think I'm glad I'm not alone on this one... I'll see what sort of close-ups I can get of it and send them to you Wynette. Definitely has me curious,,, otherwise she's not a bad pullet,

so, i've noticed something funny with my bcm hens. Not really funny, but actually pretty awesome.... Every morning, I bring in a container each of scratch and layer mash. Everyone dives right in and goes nuts... EXCEPT for the bcm girls! They sneak past me and escape to the yard! It seems they HATE commercial feed and much prefer to forage for their entire diet! I love this because it means i'm not paying a penny to feed them and their egg production is quite excellent. I'm wondering if this is a breed trait or did I just get quirky "i prefer REAL food, thank you very much!" girls?
