I was at a show where the top winning call duck came up missing. The culprit was found and claimed innocence that he thought it was one of his birds.... I seriously don't get how that could fly; I mean they have leg bands for a reason....

ok let me try again(lol) what i was trying to say was 'someone could put a light brown egg in your the show cage with your black copper marans , for the judge to see and frown upon you' .Seriously ?
Such as ppl stealing hen's eggs out of the cage at show
Yeah, ha ha ha ...and if no one stopped him ?I was at a show where the top winning call duck came up missing. The culprit was found and claimed innocence that he thought it was one of his birds.... I seriously don't get how that could fly; I mean they have leg bands for a reason....
Out here, neither the Ameraucana not the Marans would be seriously paid attention to.Yes the egg color is stated as important in the breed standard, but egg color is not being judged along with the bird in shows. The Ameraucana is similar in that the standard states a specific egg color. So the Marans is not unique in that respect. In either breed, I wonder if a pullet or hen being shown happened to lay an egg of incorrect color in the cage, would the judge disqualify the bird?
maybe they just dont really know how to judge themOut here, neither the Ameraucana not the Marans would be seriously paid attention to.
Hopefully we can get better judges someday that are not so stuck on just American breeds.
Mahalo for the endorsement, Puhi. I think you're being generous with the "8" score. I've seen that color, but not consistently. We are anxiously awaiting POL on our first pullets of this year...to see if we maintained our egg color while improving type, especially on the blue coppers.I bought eggs from Survivalseedsowers in Missouri via Ebay. The eggs I received were certainly dark - 8 I believe. I had a great hatch of vigorous chicks. As they grow now, we do see some SOP problems like a white feather in rear and purplish hue along with green hue. Other than that, theyʻre great.
I also got eggs from Jbar farms(ʻIhilani Coffee) twice. The first batch(blues)had eggs with a color of about 6. Second batch(blacks)had some huge dark whoppers at about 7-8 darkness. I hatched out 10 fat bubbles.
Iʻm pretty sure the survivalseedsowers eggs were a little darker, but the Jbar Farms produce chickens much closer to SOP. So if youʻre near West Coast, you should give Candi a call.
Take care, Puhi
I love the dispositions of our Marans. The blue coppers are much flightier than the black coppers, though I think this may be how they were raised more than their inherent characteristics. The birds we have hatched out of the flighty blue coppers are very calm and easy to be around. The blue copper breeder birds came second/third hand as POL age. Maybe the moving around made them more nervous? I'm looking forward to replacing them with birds I've raised. (We don't spend a great deal of time imprinting or handling the chicks, either, so it must be the character of the breed/lines.)What about temperament? I've heard they aren't as sweet as other chickens.
Two, maybe three cockerels. The one in front may be a cockerel also. Sorry!Hi, I am very new to BCM, just got 4 of them 6.5 weeks ago and LOVE them. I am not a breeder or using them for show, they are our pets and we just wanted something a little different in the coop this year. This is also our first year with unsexed chicks. I have read a lot on this thread and learned so much but am still a little confused about sexing my BCM. I have heard the combs in males grow quickly but that girls can also get them early. ???? As we can not have roosters in our town could someone help me know what I have. I can't tell with any of the feathers yet but the combs are very different on our chicks. The one ducking his head looks just like the one with the large comb. I would hate to get rid of one that was a pullet and accidentally keep a rooster.
What do I have??????? Two girls, two boys??????
Any help is warmly welcomed!!!!!!!!!!
