Black Copper Marans discussion thread

About those recessive whites. Does anyone know if they have fertility/hatching problems if bred together? Seems to be the case for other breeds.

Mahalo, puhi

Recessive white it what makes the best whites. That is the first I have ever heard that...... I have not seen that myself. I have White Wyandottes and a Recessive white Ameraucana and silkies..... no issues.

they both seem pretty good. the bottom one has a really nice back shape (can't tell if it's just the camera angle) and no yellow halo coloring on the neck. He lacks feathers on his legs though.

I would probably keep both and breed them with hens that have what they are missing.

Straight side-on, top, straight front and straight rear photos are more helpful to evaluate type from pics. None of that will help evaluate pelvic structure, etc. but photo evaluations are good when it's all you can get. Both of these look to have "No AssAtAll" disease but it could just be the camera angle appearing this way. The straight side-on photos will show balance or lack of it.

She maybe talking about how the sun effects the feathers on recessive white. They tend to yellow..... dom white does not yellow as much. Still recessive whites are the best and most popular in white birds.

How would one get DOM white in White Marans? I know WL are Dom white..... I don't know of any other breeds with dom white. Then you have to combat everything you are crossing INTO the marans.... egg color, leg color, leg feathering, type - did I miss something? Some things sound good in theory.... but when you start to look at the options you get very limited.

So how long am I supposed to wait to see this supposed yellowing in the sun? My oldest is six months and still snow white. She's just a very typey lovely pullet, better than any of her BCM sisters. Her comb is reddening up and I can't wait to see the egg color!

Edit/addendum: Supposedly black horses fade in sun and go yellowish/brownish, but I have proven to myself and others clearly that black horses stay black even in tropical sun if their nutrition is correct. Same with chestnuts going to a washed out pumpkin color...it's about proper mineral nutrition. Just wondering if this "yellowing" is similar?
