Black Copper Marans discussion thread

I have a black copper maran hen that is an excellent layer. She lays almost everyday. Which i LOVE. But the egg color isn't where it should be.
I am wondering if there are any breeders here in Michigan (Kalamazoo area - Grand Rapids area) that are breeding marans that have the proper egg darkness and that are also really good layers too. I don't care if the appearance of the hen is up to standard. I'm just concerned with the egg color and the frequency of eggs laid.
I'd be interested in buying 1 or 2 day old pullets and sneaking them under my broody hen at night.
Could be any variety of maran like black copper maran, blue, splash or Wheaton.

Part of the reason you are getting light eggs is she lays everyday. Dark egg layers take longer to coat the egg so they might lay once every 2 to 3 days. No having said that I have a pullet laying a pretty dark egg and she is layi g almost everyday. I would not expect a dark egg layer to lay more the 4 or 5 times a week.

That makes sense. I guess what I'm looking for isn't realistic then

My hen lays every other day and the egg color stays dark. If she starts to lay more frequently, the color starts to fade. That usually happens right before she goes broody. I hatched out the last of her eggs about a week ago and now she's sitting on pheasant eggs (long story). Can't wait to see what happens with them!

day 18 for these BCM eggs tonight-getting excited for these chicks!

Trying a bit of experiment: I will be raising three small groups of "non USA" French import bloodlines from:
Heaven Sent Ranch LP chicks hatched from eggs purchased,
Little Peddler direct stock
and a box of chicks from the advertised 2014 France imports at Greenfire Farms

I will post pics from the three as they grow.

So that they will not be mixed, I suppose I have more pens to build

.

Right now they are all babies, but their numbers are really too few for a strong eval. Anyone else trying these lines with older birds want to join me in comparisons? I am hoping to try my hand at showing a few in the spring.

Thanks,

Christine

How interesting. I can't wait to see how your experiment develops!
