Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Yours are coming along nicely. I have 16, 6 pullets and 10 cockerels. Two of my cockerels have a lot of copper on their chest. The pullets are just starting to show their copper coloring. They are 9 weeks old. They love to free range and are very friendly. Some of my cockerels have a darker head and some are more like straw coloring. Which is the standard?

The Standard is Copper, the ones with straw colouring are culls as far as the SOP. I hatched a few of those this year, it happens. They are someone's dinner already :)

I am only seeing breeding concerns about wry tail. Is there a health/well-being concern? (I'm not a breeder.)

all pullets! My roo had a distinct collar by that age.

Thanks Skrlis for taking the time to look! I can't believe it. So happy and relieved. Funny how out of the eggs that I hatched all 3 BCMs turned out female and all 3 Olive Eggers turned out male.

I hatched 1 copper marian chick in February from 7 shipped eggs. Luckily a girl and yesterday and today I got my first two eggs from her!

congrats! I had the same luck from some shipped eggs.I hatched 1 out of 7 and got a pullet lol. I'm hoping for some eggs from her soon. She's about 5 months old now and her comb is turning red. I had such high hopes for her since the egg she hatched from was so gorgeously dark but after the seller sent me more eggs to hatch (she felt bad that I only got one to hatch) and it hatched out wheaten, I got disappointed. The seller of course was like "Oh! You got a recessive white! Congratulations!". Oy. Thankfully, the baby is a pullet so she can hang out for eggs (let's face it, the wheatens are beautiful birds lol) and I can test my roo to make sure he doesn't carry wheaten. I'm hoping Mocha doesn't carry the wheaten gene. She doesn't look like it but I have no way to test her.

Wry tail can indicate pelvic distortions which can lead to hens becoming eggbound or internal layers as I understand it. It's not just to be pretty for shows, most of the faults in the Standard have production origins. We have had wry tails in our egg laying flock. Some were just fine and laid well, others were not as productive.

Congrats lol! Sometimes you are actually shocked when you hatch what you actually paid for!! Shes laid 3 eggs in 4 days which is much better than i thought for marans. She actually has started laying before my orpingtons of the same age. I guess the inly way to check the genes is to breed...
