Like previously stated... Chicks that are that dark often, but not always, grow up to not be the color that we are aiming for with BCM.

Really no way to know for sure until feathers come in.

SC, I can say the chicks are real cute but the female chicks will most likely show a lot of Mossiness. We are looking for the chicks with white around the eyes and the white throat and belly. The Mossy females usually lay darker eggs.

Honestly Don, I'm not sure. I took them out of the incubator this morning, threw them in the brooder, and then headed to work. I will get a better look at them tonight. I do know that two of them have the white around the eyes that you are talking about. Two out of 13

How about this one? 2 of the 13 look like this. I can't notice any brown in the down, but this is my first go around with day olds

First when someone sells a full grown Marans hen we must be aware that something is off center.For as hard as it is to breed a good Marans female no one is going to sell them for any price. Don

i bought her as a pullet but when she started laying i saw that her eggs arent as dark as they should be

Thank you for that. Well, if the black ones start laying green eggs, I want my money back
I noticed yours is huge, too. Are they typically this large when they hatch? These are the biggest, fattest chicks I have ever had. I only had a 50% hatch rate with my own eggs, and that is really low for me. I will check the unhatched eggs tonight, but I'm wondering if the chicks were too big for the eggs. Most of them were eggs from pullets that were laying for six weeks. The eggs are about three quarters full size

I'm not a breeder. I purchased hatching eggs and this is one of the chicks from the Black Copper Marans eggs. 2 of the 5 were light on the head, but this one has a very light beak. I figured the experts here could help me understand why this would happen.
