Black Copper Marans discussion thread

#2 They both have some red on the chest... the standard says parsimonious and some will say it should be all black.(American Standard). but I like them both about equally. The color is a little varied in both of them (some refer to it as color banance) but otherwise they look pretty good for a first crack. (I think). Someone said keep them both which is not bad but maybe since you only have two hens, you could trade one for another hen. If I had to choose I like number 2 but they are both pretty good looking birds. 2 looks bigger. The pics of 1 don't show his comb very well. HF.

I will keep both for now. I have plenty of other hens, they're just not BCMs. I'm going to try to find some more marans hens this spring.
#1's close up/comb.

Nice looking guys. Number one looks very much like my only BC male--culled for a bad attitude unfortunately.
Is there a little bit of white in the earlobes? I have a Welsummer with a bit of white in his earlobes and I wondered where it came from- his brothers don't have it.

I have several bcm's from a blue roo and black hens, this is a picture of one of the offspring. He is a blue roo with an unusual comb. I don't plan to use him for breeding, but I would like some opinions of what I should call this comb type.

They are young.. about 5 months old.
I'll try to see if I can find the name of the lady I bought the chicks from.
She's from Otter Lake, MI. Said she bought her starter birds from a lady who had some at a show. I found an add on CL and wanted the darker eggs for the color contrast in my egg basket.

You could go back to the lady (you got males from)and ask if she will sell (of this same line and/or of quality line) pullets, hens, eggs .
Also quality breeders on these yahoo groups & facebook that can and will help you ...... if you tell your general (not complete) location might be serious breeders nearby that can help you .

Be very careful with who and how you deal with people (count yourself very lucky 'getting good birds off CL' ..... just as Ebay & classifieds you will find very few good birds , but it's not impossible> huh?lol) .

That being said , this is relatively a new breed .... so no one is going to have even near perfect birds . So take criticism w/a grain of salt as the bird some dispel might be better than their own .

OK everyone. It turns out that the guy had a few roosters to choose from. This is the one i picked. I know he's very dark but he doesn't have the extra points on his comb and he has the nice dark hackles. Most of them were very light colored with halos. These pictures aren't great due to lighting but it's the best i could do with my tablet. He's roughly 6 months old so he has so filling out to do. Bring on the critiques.

If that is a white wing feather he would be a cull at my place. I never breed to Marans with white in Hackle, Wing and tail.

I think it's called a carnation comb...?. Descended from Penedesencas, another dark laying breed with these combs, and white earlobes.

Opinions from everyone are welcome! I swear, I stood at that pen for 15 minutes trying to decide which one to bring home. I'm thinking I made a great choice :) He was the only one with the deep mahogany color. There was another one that looked really good in shape and didn't have a halo but had a TON of copper on his chest. The rest had halos. I was just concerned about him being so dark. Now, as long as I can integrate him without too much fighting (after quarentine of course) and he stays friendly lol.
