Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Please keep us posted on you FBC Marans from Greenfire. I would like to see how they turn out. Thanks
Will do! We have about 20 from Greenfire, they are around 20 weeks old and I honestly think we have mostly roosters. 5 hens for sure, but the rest look like they could go either way. Maybe I am too used to bielefelders and knowing the sex right out of the gate has me questioning everything with the BCM's ;) I am going to try and get better photos tomorrow of all our BCMS from Greenfire, so I will post best quality I can get.

Most of my photos from today came out like this

While quite delightful to look out, 'tis a bit hard to really focus on the detail :)

You should be able to tell the sex at that age.

So crossing them to my roosters that have a little too much copper would be good? Weird, cause they all came from the same lady. I thought maybe the girls would get their copper in when they got older.. this boy would work ok with them though, right?

Overall I'm super excited. I didn't expect to get this lucky with my first birds. Can't wait until my hens start laying!

Your rooster looks to also have some shafting in chest area ..... if it were me and i bred him , i would cull offspring with the shafting at the proper age .

I am making a separate post for a couple of our hens.

We have 3 that have almost zero coloring whatsoever. It's a shame because they are very pretty. I was reading it IS possible to breed the hens without as much, that they would still produce chicks that had it, but would you use a rooster that has too much coloring? I am totally clueless when it comes to this, there are so many more specifics to look out for in this breed and we are really just getting started with them! Any advice is greatly appreciated
Here is one, currently named "Black Betty" (partially due to her all black coloring but mostly her desire to 'go wild' around the yard. Get the song stuck in my head anytime I see her running!) She has one teeny tiny copper fleck and that is it. She is one of our LP hens

Here is our other LP hen, she has much more copper on her and is super sweet.

I will try to get pictures of the Greenfire stock tomorrow.

My main question is, will it be possible to still use the hens without any copper to produce decent chicks? How would I go about pairing them up with the right rooster?

I'm new to this myself, but have been following this thread for a while. Am I correct to think that those black hens would be a good match for the overly colored rooster?

Just to warn all the new Marans people to be on the alert when buying Marans chicks, eggs and adult from the Farms that do all the big time advertising and have the Huge prices. Their Marans have all the same problems as all the others and sometimes more. Big price does not mean good quality Marans.
