Thanks! That'll give me something to watch for out of their offspring.

So sorry but need to vent. Six 1.5 month old BCM chicks dead, probably last night. Incubator hatched Sept 19th. They were just going to be moved to the big girl coop. 2 Roos and 4 hens. Was so looking forward to those chocolate eggs in spring. But I can only blame myself, poor wee things. Should have taken greater precautions. Just a sad event.
Linda
Edit to add it was a predator attack. Weasel maybe or fisher cat.

Just for clarification 'Shafting and Lacing are two completely different things' .
(Pipe Dreaming) There is no lacing but there is plenty of shafting on this cock bird .
Apologies for incorrectly identifying what I saw as lacing. These male do not have anything that resembles Lacing, Do not worry about lacing here.
I am sorry this happened to you. I know how awful it is. I put my BCM babies in a little coop at about the same age. A rat attacked them, he left three fatally wounded, one badly bitten and the wing torn off another. I didn't know about rats. I wish these lessons weren't so hard. What I read online is that they attack like a weasel. I was sick. Now I have to go out and look at the CL babies. I won't be able to sleep. Thanks to each of you for the sympathy. Knew I could count on people here to understand. I think living in a suburban neighborhood gave me false confidence which is ridiculous because I've chased foxes away from the big girl run. Anyway, I suspect I will hatch again perhaps in Spring but build an enclosure for the brooder to allow the little ones time on the ground. Watching Wizard of Oz with my 15 year old daughter to counteract the gloom. Chicks were hatched on her birthday.
Sorry to hear about the loss from a rat. That must have been terrible. I worry about attracting rodents some day. Sometimes think about trying to pick up a used chest freezer just for feed storage. I hear of folks using them to provide rodent proof storage.
The munchkins are singing...
Can anyone please make comments on this Roo, about 5mo old. Tails just coming back in. I've got him with my mixed flock but have 8 cockerel and 7 pullets that are only about 2 months old. Should I keep him or take 1 or 2 from the young ones when they mature. Was hoping he would be fine, that way I won't be breeding sister to brother.![]()
