I picked up some black and blue copper chicks earlier this year and ended up with a cockeral. I don't really breed them though, is this guy worth keeping? He's about 4 1/2 months old. I dont have a problem starting a new breeding pen, but won't if he isnt worth working with. Any thoughts?

I'm thinking about taking another stab at the BCM. After my first debacle, then my experience ordering AMs from Paul Smith, I have a better feel for what I need to get started. I don't mind spending decent money for live chicks, but $60 at GFF is a bit much. I like the looks of the LP birds, but when the cost of eggs is justified by saying "I don't want many people to have them", that's a turnoff as well.
I'd like to have Davis line. I don't show, and egg color will be important to me, but I also want stock that I can at least maintain breeder quality. I'm leaning towards Cree out of Washington. Does anyone have experience with their birds, or any recommendations for breeders closer to the east coast?

Morbius, If you are wanting to raise some, I think that rooster looks pretty good for a fluke.... most have to cull alot of birds to get one even that nice. (just from what I can see.). Might get a side shot of him for better look at his conformation. His color looks pretty good to me from what I can see in the picture.

Where are you located SCflock? If you are in SC, I am close. I would give you some if you wanted. Eggs, chicks,

Greenville area. I don't want anything for free, but I'd be happy to buy or trade. I have some really nice BBS AMs
Well. If you drove over here (Macon Ga) I would give (or if you insisted, sell ) you some eggs. I don't have chicks right now. But my birds are my own... no names... LOL. I got them from a fellow in Dublin Ga. as little chicks. I got a look at their parents. Their provenance, I could not say.... But they are looking pretty good if I do say so. And the eggs are getting progressively darker. I breed to the French Standard. They are all feather legged, slate legs, good eye... no crazy combs... an occasional white feather... The two roosters I have right now, I have not yet hatched anything from them so it would be an unknown... but I am sure they will be alright as they are breeding true for four plus years now. (With my culling). I cull alot of roosters. I select only the darkest eggs to hatch. post 11834 and 11835 I put some pictures on.

I couldn't trade cause I couldn't use any other type chickens as I am only interested in the BCMs... I am a hobbyist and I only have the one type. (what is a BBS AMS). But I would be happy to give or sell you some eggs. I am never going to make money on chickens. I have a day job. I would rather make a new friend. I would like to see a picture of whatever you hatched from them.

Where are you in Georgia? Can you hatch your own from eggs?

I have been think about getting and incubator, but as of now no! I'm hoping for a broody this spring, but it's probably wishful thinking, lol! I just had this conversation on the Georgia thread. If have to get another coop to justify an incubator!
