Black Copper Marans discussion thread

today my bcm pullet escaped to another run where I have a rumpless araucana cockerel. I don't know if they mated. in case they did would I be able to distinguish pure bcm chicks?

Look for the combs. If they have a line of tiny points, then bcm. A smooth slightly bumpy would indicate a pea (olive eggers). That and the leg feathering should be really less too.

thank you. I would love to have some olive eggers too.

These are approximately 1 month old in these pics.

My olive eggers end up with sporadic leg feathering too. Some have even feathers, but about half as thick.

This is a golden cuckoo maran cross with a buff orpington. The feathering is about half as thick as my pure breds:

I wanted your guys opinion on this... I get gray eggs everyone says it is not the true color because if you wash it the bloom comes off.

But you can also wash a BCM egg and it will change color as well.( scrubbed) but nobody says oh it is just the bloom.

I wish I had grey eggs and I wouldn't care what that gray is!

I like gray also, but I do have some BCM set. My BCM eggs have to be incubator set instead of hen set. the shell is weak, because my hen is low hen on pecking order. not super weak, but I don't trust them with a hen.
