Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Here how to breed a pure chooks strain just from Roosters.Example ; Marans. its called " Absorption crossing"
1) Marans Rooster BCM X your hens = F1 50% marans gene.
2) Cross F1 Cockerel ( the one look like a maran phenotype) cross him to his sister/half sister F1 ( maran phenotype ) = F2 in this generation they will be a lot variation in the phenotype.
3) Pick the F2 pullets ( the one that are more marans looking and lay darker eggs ) CROSS them to a pure BCM Rooster = F3 ,they are 75% marans.
4) cross this F3 cockerel to his F3 sisters / half sisters . always go with the marans looking chooks = F4 a litle variation in this generation but not as much as the F2.they still 75% marans genes
5) Pick the F4 best pullets ( marans type) and cross them to a BCM Rooster = F5 they will be 87.5% marans genes.
6) Cross the F5 cockerel to his sisters/half sisters . pick the marans looking chooks = F6 no much variation in this generation by now most of the chooks looks like marans and you will see the one s currying any recessive genes they are a cull .
7) Pick the best F6 pullets and Cross them to a BCM Rooster = F7 this generation will breed true marans

ONE thing is very important is to CROSS the sibling together each type you use a new Rooster. WHY . is to breed out any recessive genes IF you don t do that you will never breed true marans BECAUSE the recessive genes of the original strain crossed to the marans will be passed down.

HOPE that Help

A google search for "absorption crossing" sure doesn't bring much up, just one conversation about cow breeding and your comment here. An FA:hmmrg document mentions it, but they describe it very differently to what you've described.

Can you point me to any further discussion of this "absorption crossing"?

We could start with where did you get what you wrote from??

Ok here goes! Has anyone ever seen a BCM without a tail? I have a couple around 12 or 13 weeks old! There are two without tails in the second picture. What is up with that?

Yes, this happens to most any show fowl. There is a name for it but can not spell it with out one of my books being open. Just cull them to the freezer.

Oh Thank you! I thought I would have to cull the whole batch! We will wait and see how they turn out! I have two batches. The other batch is about three weeks older and has a lot less junk in it. They came from the same breeder and she has nice BC!

Congrats on the hatch! Yes you can get a chart for $4 here: http://www.maransofamericaclub.com/moac-logo-products.html Different cameras and lighting really change the color of the eggs so it's nice to see them next to the official chart. Were the eggs you posted from the pure GFF Marans?

Congrats SC! I hope you get a good ratio of cockerels and pullets. Let the games begin!
Thank you! I will be getting one this week and I will take pictures to compare. The eggs in the photo are a combination of GFF and LP eggs. We only have two LP hens and about 7 GFF hens so majority in there would be Greenfire.

Looking back I really wish we'd have kept more males until they were big enough to see how they turned out. Unfortunately with our LP hatch we only ended up with one so we have to work with what we've got for now. I'd love everyone's opinion on them now that they are older though! I had posted their photos quite some time ago and didn't get much feedback, likely because they were too young to tell how they'd turn out.

This is our Little Peddler roo, the only one we hatched.

I will have to get better photos of the GFF roo this is the only one I have of him and you can't see much

. Ignore our little wheaten ameraucana hen, she lives with the BCM's since her boyfriend got killed by an owl. She is a total freeloader, 9 months old and no eggs yet.

Do you need to borrow an axe?

HI NTBugtraq.
By the way your BCM Rooster is a good one ,chunky Rooster.

I ll use Cockerel number 3 over his sisters/half sisters = to get the F2. I like this cockerel .big size, long back, nice tail, good color for a cross .I can t see his feet properly .HE S A GOOD F1 COCKEREL.

if your original BCM rooster still young you can put him over his daughters to get different F2 and you can compare to the other F2 your self and see .Breeding is fun we should enjoy t.

HI TNBuqtraq.
Absorption Crossing is well used in Cattle , sheep, Goat
this crossing is design to help a farmer to get better result from they existing herds by introducing a super sire every year and keeping the hardiness of they Herd and the way they farm them.So year by year breeding they managed to change they herd for a better superior one with less cost ,just time.

Here in Australia is well used to recreate European type cattles and sheeps well adapted to this country resistance to bugs, drought , heat , out door all a year around, etc....

I worked on a project in Africa 1987/88/89/90 ,Dairy Cattle project. French company .This project was in Kenya .we crossed the local Zebu Catle Cows with a French mountain Dairy cattle Adondance Bulls. I had to leave after 4 years to go and work on another project.

This crossing is used for a plant too ,it s called Cubing ,creating seed from just one clone plant .

Does work with all sort of things .

in chicken we can use t as well NOT only to cross 2 different strains but to work with a pure strain too,is a best way to enhance any blood line.
I always hear people say; that I had to get ready of my line because they was crap , and now I m looking to get a better one , that is a comment mistake .
If they use the Absorption Crossing they only need to buy a good Rooster from a Good breeders ,year after year tell they get to the F6 from there they will have a Breeder blood line ( Rooster have to come from the same breeders every year) 92%pure.

Breeding and Genetic is Fun we all can do t just need a note book to write the thing you see and compare t later,
