This trio of Marans fell into my care a couple days ago. They were in very poor conditions and are in quarantine. Berry shy birds. I truly feel blessed to have rescued them. Any information would be helpful. Sunny, bright eyed and Bushy tailed a are there names. Sunny only has 2 toe nails from frost bite and Bright Eyed has less coloring and foot feathers. Thanks for criticism, I am not a breeder but if they are good, that could change.

Man, Im seeing "black copper" breeders come out of the wood work here lately..First let me explain. I breed for egg color and I try to keep the standard but I don't show birds..Still I try to cull and keep it true..I don't care how other folks raise or breed their chickens, that being said........Im seeing a ton of Marans eggs popping up for sale on the various local facebook pages, craigslsist etc that cant be any darker than what my RIR's lay..I don't mean borderline 4's, I mean 2's and maybe 3's...
That's just sad. I hope more people will do their research and stay away from the sellers.

Sorry to say but these are mix breeds, look at the yellow legs on the male, Pullets also have signs of being mixed.

I didn't think they were show birds snowbird. Can you tell me all the poor traits besides yellow legs on Sunny? I also got 4 cuckoo maran hens that are laying 4's and 5's. Don't think I can post those on this string. Thanks for any knowledge.

Chickengr, thanks for your reply. They were born last Sept so about 6 months. No signs of eggs yet. In looking closer at Bright Eyes ear lobes, I believe she is just really pale. They all had a yellowish look to their faces and combs which is turning pink now. I am not sure if they are rapidly coming of age or if they've improved in just 3 days. Regardless, they are much happier and learning to perch, scratch and hunt.

if you are not a breeder wait for the eggs. I am glad to hear they are happy now. if their eggs are dark you can have them for eggs or you can try to breed olive eggers. they are beautiful birds for a backyard flock anyway.
