Black Copper Marans discussion thread

here a French standard about the leg color. - tarsi-

Average size , with some feathers White or lightly pink coloured for all the varieties except for the BLACK. BROWN -RED and BIRCHEN Marans were grey or dark grey is permitted , although NOT preferred for both sexes .Four long and well separated toes with the outer one sparsely fathered ..The claws are white or horn coloured .

we have to understand .very important. they are saying grey or dark grey is PERMITTED BUT NOT PREFERRED .

Flame on the hackle of a BCM Rooster will produce pullets with incomplete hackle manly where the head and neck meet.

what the APS say about the BCM legs color ?

We are probably working with different genetics here in USA. I would not breed a male that was week in the hackle color. Same goes for the White leg BC Marans. I have always culled them.

I agree with you Snowbird . by not breeding from a male that was week on the hackle color.

nice rich ,lush coppery hackle

flames has nothing to do with a richness of the copper.

look at the Salmon marans hens hackles ,they have hackles with a large flame all the way from top to end. BECAUSE we select a Rooster with a healthy amount of Flames.

if we want BCM hens with a gorgeous coppery hackles .they fathers have to have coppery hackles free from flames.spotted chest and coppery ears tufts .

I am well aware of what the Flame is and have been breeding Marans in large numbers for eight year. We will have to agree to disagree.

Well, they may have THAT guy in Frahnce but right here in Talent, Oregon, I am the proud owner of THIS guy and he is the champion around here. Flames and all! Now I know that his comb is too big and his eyes are too dark and his legs aint the right color but you have to admit that he is handsome as the day is long.

Snowbird WE have nothing to agree or disagree, BECAUSE we did not make a standard .we are discussing it.pretty logic .
BUT the standard has nothing to do with what YOU or ME or somebody else like or dislike .is not up to us

The Standard is for every body to apply if they want to achieve perfection and keeping the purity of the strain..

the days we start choosing the right colored BCM roosters ,we ll have a high percentage of BCM pullets with a coppery hackles NO BLACK PULLETS and every body is asking why they are BLACK?

BECAUSE a wrong colored Rooster.

Black pullets is a virus spreading every where in a BCM strain WE have to do some thing about t.NOT agree and disagree .does not help the marans chooks witch we all love and work with.

If his tail was a little lower he would work just fine for me. Nice looking BC Marans male and like his Hackle and leg color.

The Marans in the USA have been crossed with just about everything possible. There are no lines in USA that will be true year after year. Most of the BC Marans in the USA have Wheaten Marans mixed in them and they will produce a lot of culls. Anyone here should test mate their BC Marans to see if there is wheaten involved.

That is a good point I see where you are coming from.

agree with you 100% we should test mate our breeding stock to see what are made up off .

the same thing happen here in Australia ,they have been crossed with all sort of thing.that why I m hatching great numbers ..this year I kept 90 bird from over 2500 hatched. a lot chooks for a freezer and the foxes .

this year every rooster and every hen will be test mated .NO more pen breeding for me.

cheers.
