Black Copper Marans discussion thread

This thread is like the best on the internet. I love post # 7635 and post #7636 where Don and Wynette complete opposite opinions. I have read over 3yrs to 5yrs and it seems everyone is working on the same faults. White in tail feathers. Copper color too yellow, not copper but Mahogany, legs not dark enough, not enough feathers on leg. Hens without copper hackle seems to be another big one. I love this stuff.

The most important ingredient, in my opinion, is passion. Sounds like you have that in spades. I know just how you feel!

This could be post # 10 and the journey continues . When I first started reading all this there was GEEBS and PINK and WYNETTE , where are they now. Well and good I hope.

With the amount of chicks I grow out just can not afford to grow out the Culls. By all means if you would like grow out all you can as a learning experience. I always say they belong to you so do whatever you would like with them. Sometimes it is just cheaper to take some advice from someone that has grown out several thousand BC Marans over the past eight year. Good luck with your Marans.

My goals are very different from yours :), I'm growing for layers, I'm not growing for showing. This breed had good ratings on temperament vs laying and there is a lady locally that gets a kick out of hatching. She likes to hatch and I like to have hens around.

Pink is still around and still has Marans. Wynette is still a Moderator on BYC. She is on the FB groups and one of the Officers in the MCCusa Marans club.

Sometimes the Marans that are not close to the SOP will lay darker eggs than the Marans that are excellent quality, even the Mossy colored BC Marans will sometime lay a darker egg. If you want the Darker colored eggs try and keep just one line of Marans as everytime you bring in a new line and mix with what you already have the color will fade.

So can I get a critique on this cock. 20 weeks old.

Very, very nice Cockerel
Great length of Back
Tail shape and angle is very good
Width of wack appears to be wide all the way back
Good wing carriage, carried well up
Hackle and saddle have nice color.
He looks great in the third picture.
Comb also look to be nice.
Forgot to say that his Balance is great and also look at the broad breast
