Black Copper Marans discussion thread

I will be able to let everyone know if that is true. We had a power outage 2 weeks ago for 5 hourse when the outside temps were -10 degrees F.

My incubator got down to 60 for about 3 hours. I had eggs in it that were 2 weeks into incubation and 1 week.

OUt of the 2 weeks olds that hatched last Sunday, about 2/3 of them did hatch, but the funny things is, all the Ameraucanas had trouble, and after hatch, eventually died.

The Marans mostly lived, 1 died, I think it was trampled.

Anyway, the week old eggs didn't fare so well, and I had to toss half of them. They are due this Sunday, so will see what happens.

So, I will know in a month or so, if I have mostly roosters...becuase of the temp drop.

Forgive me if this has already been covered (and because it's probably a stupid question LOL), but with all this talk of black coppers carrying wheaton genes, especially if they have light legs and eyes like my roo, how do you tell adult wheaton and black copper roos apart? From pics they look identical to me, but I've never seen a wheaton in person as far as I know. Is there a telltale easy definitive trait to look for? Worrywart me wonders if I've ended up with a wheaton sport roo.

The easiest way to tell a Wheaten and a Black Copper roo apart is to look at the wing triangle, Wheatens will be cinnamon in color and Black Coppers will be black.

Hi,
can anyone help me with a chick question?
I got a dozen BCMs as eggs to hatch, and they are almost two weeks old now, so feathering.
they all have white tipped wings, in their fuzz... but are now also growing one or two white feathers on their wing tips.
my current hen did not have this...
but my current roo I got as a cockerel so I don't know what he was like at first.

do they start like that or are these poor examples... ?

you can see one of their little wing tips in this pic under the yellow one...

Thanks Sue,
I just wanted to be sure...
of course they all look to ME to be roos too... LOL...
they have awfully big combs..
but I'll give them another week or so and post pics to see what you all think...

Here's my boy Chappy!

He's almost 8 months old. Anyone care to tell me the positive and negative things about him, other than the wild feather in his tail that is sticking out? I know the pics aren't great -- I had a heck of a time keeping my SPOILED fowl out of my face long enough to snap shots!

Thanks in advance everyone. I love this forum!

Hi Seabreeze, I'm new here and a total computer retard, but this is what I did: hit your "reply" button to start your post, then hit "Uploads" from up above by the BYC Forum header. That will open a new screen. Hit "choose file" and pick out your picture, and then hit "submit." It will automatically resize your picture for the forum's specifications. There are going to be two boxes that come up, one will say image or "img" or something like that. Highlight the text inside the box -- the WHOLE thing -- and then hit control C on your keyboard. This makes a copy. Then switch back to your post and hit control V from your keyboard. That will enter the code for the image on your post. I hope I'm being helpful and not redundant for anyone else!

I don't buy this theory. I had crazy swings on my first incubation. I had eggs from three different sources - - -

Delawares - - - 1 cockerel and 4 pullets

My marans - - - 4 cockerels and 0 pullets

cpartist marans - - - 4 cockerels and 5 pullets

I did a second hatching with just my marans to see if my roo was capable of producing anyting other than cockerels. . . .
I am real sure that I got more pullets than roos this time around. So, maybe I will hold onto my roo a little longer.
