Black Copper Marans discussion thread

I don't buy this theory. I had crazy swings on my first incubation. I had eggs from three different sources - - -

Delawares - - - 1 cockerel and 4 pullets

My marans - - - 4 cockerels and 0 pullets

cpartist marans - - - 4 cockerels and 5 pullets

I did a second hatching with just my marans to see if my roo was capable of producing anyting other than cockerels. . . .
I am real sure that I got more pullets than roos this time around. So, maybe I will hold onto my roo a little longer.

I think this is more true on the industrial level using averages from a larger quantity of eggs. Within a single smaller hatch, you're dependent on the fact that you may or may not have an equal number of undeveloped hens and roos to begin with. We've all had really good hatches when almost all of the eggs hatch and we still get uneven numbers. It may be an insignificant difference in a smaller hatch, I just thought it was interesting. What I read did not give hard statistics.

There is the proposed APA standard for marans. The qualifing show is this month at Newnan, Ga.
Until the standard is approved . . . . Marans can be showed at regular poultry shows under a special catergory. It is basically an "other" catergory.
I forgot the actual name, so one of those in the know will have to fill in the blank for me.

Seabreeze,

Do you have anymore back home like him?

Lordy, he is p u r r r r d y.

I like the beetle green sheen, too! I think it just makes a bird more dramatic looking.

I read something about this too. I am hesitant to believe things until I can see some numbers tied in with the occurence. There are so many theories out there with chickens, but few people have sat down and kept records good enough to support their claims.

That is what I like about working with GEEBS with this 6 month study on our chicks. It will provide excellent documentation of the changes, PLUS with having other particpate within their own flocks, it will provide validation of our observations. It just satisfies all the inner needs of this mathematician. . .

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Normally not an issue for me to tell the color of chicks apart from one another but I can't figure out if this baby is a Black Copper or a VERY DARK Blue Copper......I'm leaning toward Black. I hope so, then I can take part in this study with geebs.
