Oops. So sorry. I've posted them in BSA. Forgive me, I'm sort of out of it - laid up with flu and pneumonia.

Good morning, friends!

I just wanted to share a pic of a couple eggs I got yesterday. Looking at the Marans egg, it's not all the impressive in & of iteself. However, this egg was just the 2nd one laid so far this year from that hen, and the hen is 4 years old! Typically, the older they get, the lighter their eggs get as they "run out of paint for the spray paint factory" - I just am SO very impressed with the color on this egg from a hen of that age, and wanted to share!

ETA: This egg was laid by the same hen that laid the Marans egg in my avatar, which was from last year around this time - you can see that, in fact, it HAS lightened a bit from last year.

I think that egg is beautiful Wynette...you better pack it and send it over to me! For a 4 year old hen...she's got it goin' on!!!

Hi All, I know this may be blasphemy, but I am over feather footed chooks!! Too much mud and clean up for me. Also, they are slow... physically... always the first taken by predators. I am interested in clean legged Marans. I have made a deal with a fellow locally to pass on his clean leggers, but I thought if anyone just culls all of their clean leggers, maybe they would be willing to pass them on. I know, it does not meet the standard, and I am setting myself up for a bit of a er... sleet storm.. but, we like what we like.. Not everyone likes chocolate ice cream. Thanks for your patience. Tremendous thread, by the way, very informative.

Thanks, Pink!! And, this was taken indoors, under a light, and with flash!

HiddenHill - no worries! If you love Marans for their eggies, then love them for their eggies! You don't HAVE to breed to the proposed standard - there's not a darn thing wrong with just wanting gorgeous eggies!

HiddenHill~

I completely agree with Wynette 100%. A person needs to breed what makes them happy and what they like....and most importantly what works for them.
I purposely breed and keep 2 clean legged Marans in with my feather shanked Marans, the fact that they are clean legged does not bother me one bit....they are wonderful birds and good specimens of the Marans overall and they give me no room to be disappointed with egg color.

Good luck with your birds and enjoy them...nothing like a Marans.

Thank you for the kind words Wynette, I do love the eggs. I am going to pick up a dozen hatching Marans eggs today, with a deal to trade the breeder my feather footed for his clean leggers. Gotta love working together. I reckon that is one of the finest things about BYC.. A real community of folks helping each other out. There seems to be little of the ultra competitive nature so indicative of the American culture sickness. Great to have folks helping each other out.

YUP! I love BYC - I learned about 80% of what I know about chickens here!

It's also opened my eyes in many ways....I've made lifelong friends....and I don't see myself ever leaving this most awesome forum! I'm glad you're enjoying BYC!!

....None of my BCM hens are 4 years old yet. But that egg is a testament to your program. Happy for you.
