Black Copper Marans discussion thread

WOW!!! Nice face markings.. Nice chicks... Congrats PINK!!!

Geeb, really nice color on your boy!

PInk Chick, gorgeous babies! I can definitely see differences in what you think are pullets versus cockerels. I notice that with my chicks. I have some new pics of our chicks at about 1 week but they are on my Mac and its acting up so I'm using the PC laptop (ugh). But it works ok.

It usually ends up for me, that the chicks with the most leg feathering are boys...I'm sure that isn't written in stone, but seems to be pretty accurate for me.

Love the color of this boy! How old is he? Seems he may be lacking in depth, but if young, that should come in.

I want to see pics of your Blue Copper winners, did no one take pics of them??

I love learning all this stuff!! Sometimes I go into overload (just trying to learn the tiny, infintesimal nuances) but its slowly coming along!

Here are some more pics of our hens I shot today since the day was glorious sunshine! (we've been so foggy, soggy, misty and cold....but typical western Oregon). A couple pics of one of the roo's *kids* at about 8 days ? old.

Thanks Debbi. Several of my girls seem almost black with no copper showing. Most of them are still youngish (10 months) and a couple have definite copper on their necks. The ones with no copper showing, is that because they are more melanistic or just a big fault there is no copper?

Yes, from what I've learned, they are over melanized where the black covers up the copper. Mine all seem to have an abundance of the mahogany gene, so I'll need a roo with some red flecking on the breast to breed these to, to improve the next generation of hens. Will have to do an experimental breeding with a lighter hackle colored roo with them to see what that produces too, but may get some wheaten sports out of it?

Looking at your baby pic, I see pullet! That's just me, nothing scientific, just looking at the face and stature, I see pullet! Don't hold me to that!

WoW! I didn't even stick around long enough to see all these beautiful birds last night. I posted and ran, my bad. Should have stuck around longer and chatted "pretty bird" with all of you.
