Black Copper Marans discussion thread

It looks to me you have two pullets. No band and pink orange blue band. Thank you for the photos. It is interesting to see how much their leg color changed.

I'll take a *peck*

They had "pink" feet the whole time. HOWEVER, the first two sets of pictures @ day 9 and Day 19 were taken inside using soft white light bulbs.

Today, 1 month, I took MOST of the pictures outdoors. . . . Now the pink is showing up good.

It is AMAZING how they have changed. Those with brown, mossy spots, have almost totally gone away.

You can usually start to see some copper coming in the hackles around 6 weeks and in some even earlier, but it can take some time to come in on the wing bow, back and saddle areas. They will change alot by age 6 mos. and even then they can still change and get more copper at a slightly more mature age. How old are they?

With the last hatch from my own stock - - - 4 out of 4 were roos.

IF only 2 are pullets, that would make a 7 out of 9 roo ratio.

So what are the thoughts out there . . . . . ...

Does the roo or the hens or neither control the sex of the offspring ? ? ?

Science says it's the hen. Tell your girls to stop laying those little roo eggies.
The ZW sex-determination system is a system that determines the sex of offspring in birds, some fish and crustaceans such as the giant river prawn, some insects (including butterflies and moths), and some reptiles, including Komodo dragons. In the ZW system it is the ovum that determines the sex of the offspring, in contrast to the XY sex-determination system and the X0 sex-determination system, where it is the sperm which determines the sex.

Hey Geebs,
Huge congrats on the winning formulas. Makes all that "taking your brain out and playing with it" worth it eh?

Doesn't Alecia have a camera? Good job keeping it all under wraps for a whole year... but now the cat's out of the bag!

Methinks BYC is in need of a "Blue Copper Marans discussion thread" with lots of pictures. Or at least add the blue to this one.

Whadd'ya think Pink?

Ya I have nagged Alecia to death.... Don't know why she hasn't sent any pix... I have asked... I think she has posted on the marans forum... I just can't "see" em...

Oh and thanks VC... your are right... I sure have enjoyed the ride... I can reproduce the males here.... I am still working on the perfect bc hen... Getting closer.... I will be able to reproduce the good Ghiradelli this spring... I haven't even tried here yet... Weather is so aweful... I don't mind cold, it is the wet that is so troublesome.. I am hoping that I have a good cross on her... I sent some eggs out for a test hatch in December so hopefully I will get a good look at something worth having on the female side of things... I sent out some that I think will be overcolored males and hopefully good females... I am still narrowing the gap between too much and not enough... It is a sticky wicked isn't it...
