Okay sorry to be posting my mutts on your BCM thread but it was relevant to VC's point and they did come from BC Marans (they've just been improved from there! ha!).

I hope they lost the copper but I don't know yet.

It was working... the feather sexing... I got a little freaked out by the "K" gene as I did some reading and found that it left the bird open for LL....

You can feather sex them over time here... I don't know if it is due to X gene or Y gene or whatever mumbo jumbo...I have read and reread until I am blue... It just doesn't stick...

.... I wonder if the penedesenca has anything to do with it...I know they add a gene that eliminates leg feathering... what it also adds I do not know....

I was within a couple generation able to distinguish my males and female from each other at day 3....That was when I was breeding blue... So I know it can be done... Since I have been breeding blacks and I grow them out to 6 months it doesn't really matter... I do still cull the middle of the road ones... They tend to take up to 6 months to distinguish.... I got those from Jesse Bryant... really late bloomers... And I also cull anything that has no tail like an americauna...I know some ppl thing they are cute.. and they are but they bring nothing good to a flock..

I have made note of my guesses on the hatch from January first. At first I thought I had 3 boys and now it looks like two... It isn't a perfect system... But I am no genetics expert...

I can't seem to wrap my brain around things like you VC... I have to have it in front of me and do it... Totally hands on.. That is why I say it is possible...I did it once.....Still do cull maybes.... but since I grow them out (which is by far the best practice) it isn't as important... It was a area of focus for me in the beginning.. probably because I kept Asiatic fowl before... Probably should quit wasting birds... LOL

I found one time... when I thought I hatched all males.. that I was culling females.... It wasnt until I grew them out to 7 month.. really nearly 8 that the one I thought was a rooster FOR SURE... laid an egg... This type of indistinguishable offspring is just too much..... It was the Jesse Bryant line... I don't know what explains that genetically.. but I think the bird was an alien with some ZZ genetic... LOL

What do you make of that??? any ideas...

hi what does everyone use to candle their maran eggs?to get thourgh dark shell. not pricey pleaes 30 or less.

i use 3 led flashlight on all my other eggs.

The most bang for your buck is the Coleman with 117 lumen... It runs around 30 dollars at Walmart.. I am a geek and use one from surefire that can bar b que steak... LOL

I just got this one in the mail today. Hoping it will work on my Marans eggs come day 10.
VERY bright 220 Lumens but can be used at 110, 50 etc... Has different settings.

You can typically find them as freebies on Craigslist if you ask...that thing sees through concrete walls.

Tell me about it. I had really hoped to find someone I could get good birds from. I asked at the breed information table if there was anyone selling and was told "go look at the cages." I told him that finding a breeder was the whole reason I came (as I stood there on crutches!) and he ignored me. So I ended up meeting a really creepy guy and the guy I eventually bought from. His eggs weren't nearly what I wanted but he was nice to me.

Mr creepy couldn't keep his eyes off my boobs and tried to sell me 3.5 year old birds. According to my breeder, they quit laying at 3 or 3.5. UGH!
