Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Yes, I know, total geek... but to me it's like pulling apart the alarm clock to figure out what makes it tick.

There is a mutation found in chickens called "hen feathering". It's found in Hamburgs, Campines and maybe others.

Hen's probably carry it, but it's expressed in roosters that feather out like hens with no pointy hackle feathers, no saddle feathers, and coloration exactly like the hen.
Maybe you had a mutation that worked the other way?

Oh, and by the way, chickens do have Z chromosomes! Males are ZZ and females are ZW. The W is tiny that's why some genes are only single in hens because they don't "fit" on the W half. You're a bigger genetic geek than you realize!

Well, that's a bunch of crap, Sabella! I'm sorry you got shot down when asking a question. That's very disappointing.

Tell me about it. I had really hoped to find someone I could get good birds from. I asked at the breed information table if there was anyone selling and was told "go look at the cages." I told him that finding a breeder was the whole reason I came (as I stood there on crutches!) and he ignored me. So I ended up meeting a really creepy guy and the guy I eventually bought from. His eggs weren't nearly what I wanted but he was nice to me.

Mr creepy couldn't keep his eyes off my boobs and tried to sell me 3.5 year old birds. According to my breeder, they quit laying at 3 or 3.5. UGH!

Luckily our BYC NC family is friendly, and we tried to have a meet at the last show, we at least saw each other. I definitely would be floored though if they did blow me off. Not cool for sure!

Did you see the lady that was selling Bev Davis bloodline CHICKS (BC & Blue C) ??

There only seemed to be roosters in the Marans forsale . Wished i had met you , i would have sure tried to help you even though we only had roosters (also) forsale . I do remember seeing a lady w/crutches one time somewhere but it's all pretty much a haze now (lol) , big show , lota people . I do remember one busy busy guy that had some maran hens but no black copper and they all looked a li**le ro*gh .
Best To You ,
Shannon

Good luck with that. I went to the big show in Newnan and asked one question and got shut down. I guess I asked the wrong person. I did study the winning BCM roo and hen. Both were incredible. I also took mental pictures of a disqualified hen. And, of course, I didn't imprint the winning blue copper male in my head and that is what I bought the next day!!! Everyone there was super duper busy so I didn't really feel as though I should annoy too many people with my beginner questions. Thankfully my breeder is ok with me calling him twice this week!

I'll try to get a pic of the lacing later. I've annoyed her enough today. (Between shipping stress and a black eye the first night she got sick. Now my blue pullet is acting NQR. DH needs to get that coop built!!)

That was probably me. I came on Saturday and was the only gimp there. Yeah I wasn't thrilled with the sale tent. And the guy with the scruffy hens was mr creepy. He had the BC's set aside. Said he'd ship me the old ones.

He was down on the very end of the sale row.

And I missed the chicks! I was so tired from gimping around on my crutches that I missed a lot. The judging was so amazingly slow that I couldn't see much before I got tired out. It was really great to see so many Marans though!

The lady with chicks was the very first small setup after coming out of sale tent and heading down sale row(on right) BUT she positioned herself about 30-40 feet back from the pavement , why ?...... 'i don't know' ....... it was only after making 3-4 trips around that i looked up and saw her .

That was the one ..... what did you buy from him ? he is suppose to have good blood .

You might be right... Just trying to wrap my brain around the chickens... Really hard for me... I can't quite get it to stick... It's like butter sliding off hot toast!!! Too much reading this week... my brain hurts..

Hey, Sabella - it's simply not true that 3-4 year old hens stop laying! I posted a few pages back a pic of a gorgeous egg, not much lighter than the one in my avatar, that was laid by a 4 year old hen. She has been laying 3-4 eggs per week...I think that's pretty darn good! And, it's why I haven't replaced her yet.

up the creek, no, he gave me the heebie jeebies big time. His eggs were so nice that I will save his contact info.

wynette, I JUST saw that egg. (i keep coming back to this end of the thread to check for replies.)
