Black Copper Marans discussion thread

He he he... oh and I said HE!!! I think it is male... I concur with Pink and Math about number one... Do not worry about the mossies until they are grown... you either math... Sometimes their growth happens quickly and the melanisers (black) needs to play catch up... Only worry if they still have that trait as adults... If you cull to early because of this trait only you may find your flock lacks enough copper...and is too black.

I hope they're not all boys!!!! The breeder sexed them by their wings. Long wing with saw tooth feathers was declared Female, short wing with smooth feathers was declared male. He also made them squawk. Ear piercing = girl, deep = boy. All very scientific

The one he wasn't sure about went back in his pen.

We were just discussing feather sexing earlier...Not even foolproof... VC doesn't think it is possible in marans.. I think it is possible to a point... but there is an exception.. very few ppl have owned them long enough to get that to work.. I am sure it was not intentional...but I would make a point to educate the person so that they do not continue to mislead the planet.. I am sure they will feel bad... so be nice..

And from what I'm reading on the vet forum I need to kill a breeder. I am SO FRUSTRATED!!! If I can get my money back can y'all help me find some good kiddos? If I can't then I'm just going to have to get $3 birds from the feed store. Money is tight as it is and I spent $135 on these guys. This guy came recommended from a friend of mine. He's brought folks from out of state to buy this guy's birds!

I could cry. I am so disappointed.

I wouldn't get too upset... Just take him back and get a replacement choice....No one would do this on purpose....(no one I know).. It is really bad for a reputation...I bet he moves heaven and earth to replace em... REALLY...let him grow out a little till we are all sure.. and insist on an older bird... It is hard to sex them.. it isn't foolproof... for that kind of money I am sure he will make it right... that is why you went to him... REALLY ... getting mad won't help... besides... it is a GREAT looking roo... and truth be told... a good rooster is harder to find than a good hen... you may end up with a nice trio and he may GIVE you a hen to boot... I would...
