Hi Everyone,
I started with chickens a year ago with the run of the mill feed store kind. I have since discovered the joy and beauty of breeder birds. I still have many of my beginning birds but have added Wyndottes and Cochins. I would really like to add a few Marans to the mix. Are there any Maran Breeders in Kentucky?
Thanking you all in advance, Mari
Pink, Geebs,
I've been at the kippenjungle genetics website a hundred times, and I don't know why I don't remember ever reading this: "Melanotic is dominant, especially for the females, and is able to make "extended black" and "birchen" based animals full black."
Now according to Blackdotte Melanotic is NOT enough to make birchen based birds full black, but maybe he means hens and roosters. Just another reason to single breed for the right hen color. Maybe breeding correct BCM is always going to be like breeding Andalusians... you always get some of the "wrong" color while breeding for the right one.

Good luck..........................I so enjoy the excitement of it all. From now on I am going to set in the early morning. I wonder if that will help. I set in late afternoon last time & was await all night waiting.......LOL. I honestly have no idea if that has anything to do with it or not, but I am going to give it a try........LOL
