I know there was some question of sexing our chicks a month or so ago.

Well, feather sexing did not work AT ALL for me. . .

I just got this response from the seller of my most recent egg purchase . . .

Geebs and Sabella, So sad! I have the urge to run down to the basement brooder and to the chicken coops to just stare at the birds for awhile to make sure everyone's okay. Geebs your hen was a beauty. Sabella, I've yet to find a BC roo that is sweet, it must be so disappointing to lose a nice one. I had to euthanize a roo about 6 months ago with an extended (no muscle tone) crop. That was hard enough, and he wasn't even all that nice.

I remember someone saying something like that & I thought it was Gilavina, but when I later mentioned it to her she said it wasn't her (at the time I didn't know she was a she....LOL). I remember thinking it was a guy that explained that method to us. I wonder if it was Randy or Dave???? Anyway. I am going to copy & paste it to my BYC notes folder.

Is this just with Marans chicks or can this be done with any breed?

Soooo..... anyone else working on a smaller strain of CBM? I have this pair that hatched out last year. Not sure if they are exactly bantam, but they are WAY smaller than the other birds. They were in with my Standard BLRW pen for a while, so the roo got his tail plucked and his comb beat up. I took some pics so you can see how he looks. She just started laying this week. I am STOKED with the pullet. Love her plumage, even though it might have too much sheen for some breeders. She has shorter outside toes, but besides that, Love her. The roo, he is smaller than she is, compared to his dad. He has way too much copper on his breast, and some spangling (okay, a LOT, lol) on his chest. His comb has three obvious long points, one long one that nearly blends into the back portion of his comb, and one nub in front that could be called a point if someone was really grasping at straws. The comb does set up off his neck pretty nicely. Feathered legs on both, and both hatched out of dark eggs. The pullet is laying dark eggs. Shown is this week's "take" are the three in the cardboard egg carton in front of the styro one full of regular marans eggs from the Bev pen. I think, even with the flaws, it is a heckuva start on "small" marans. Here's pics, and a bib. LOL don't drool on your keyboard, it might short out.

For reference, the wire mesh is 1" x 1/2" welded wire. And the roo doesn't always stand so tall. I just put him in there for pics, and he kept trying to look over the retaining wall.

Is the roo rumpless?? I'm not seeing any kind of tail in these pics.

No, he got his butt plucked down to nothing when he was moulting and the tail feathers didn't grow in. He had them when he was a baby, so I'm guessing next molt he will show what kind of tail he has.
