I like to have a variety of breeds and egg colors, and my husband's motto is "go big or go home", thus the Giants
.
The coppery BCM is actually a boy (that is a boy isn't it????
. ) The black is my girl. I'm not planning on any serious breeding, I just have a nice little backyard flock for our entertainment and eggs, heee hee!. I wanted the BCM's for the dark eggs, however, the breeder did say these would be more the color of a terracotta pot.

Monet looks to have feather shafting along with too much color (mossy) can't really tell how chunky he is but he is very colorful just not in a good way for SOP....
Gabrielle looks like she's mossy and also has the shafting hard to tell for sure though
Better shots: picasaweb.google.com/chilifur/BCMaransColorStudy# be sure to add an https:// at the front to complete the link
Would someone please explain "feather shafting"? And, asking again, how much of these color issues alter after the first few molts? I saw several comments on the general Marans thread about not culling roos until after they've molted a few times because things change, but I didn't catch what kinds of things.
Update on Vivienne - after talking with the breeders, it appears that she was most likely mistakenly labeled a BC and is really a Black Marans. Which would explain several things and give me better info to move forward on! ;-)
Is there an existing thread that just speaks to genetics of color and features without being breed specific? This forum is just too big and the Marans thread is over 1300 pages long. Very difficult to find generalities!
COCKEREL # 1
How about the little tiny point at the back of this comb - - - it DOES NOT come from the side of the comb ( not a Side sprig)
Here is another look at that comb with the downward tiny point at the back of the blade
COCKEREL # 2
How about the point that looks like it is cut or divided into two ? ? ? Does that count as one point or two points?
COCKEREL # 3
HOW about the WAVE ? ?? Will he grow into this comb or will he most likely ALWAYS have the WAVE ? ? ?
COCKEREL # 4
What about the bumps on the side of the comb? ? Compared to the other FUNKY combs, this one looks pretty good. HOWEVER, I am paranoid about side sprigs. . . . This comb has bumps on the side of the comb - - - ALL THEY OK ? ?
I am seeing a BIG POT OF CHICKEN AND DUMPLINGS . . . .

My previous understand was that you start at the beginning of the comb ( near the face) and count EVERY SINGLE point ( no matter how small) until you reach the BLADE in the back of the comb. You do not count any points on the blade.
NOW, someone will need to jump in hear and correct me if I am wrong

You are correct, you count every point starting in the front, until the blade.
Looks like some "different" combs going on there. Any floppy comb on a rooster is a dq, the thumb print I think is a fault, not a dq, I don't know what that back pointy thing is, but of all, the last is probably the best of the bunch. But in the scheme of things, combs are way down on the points scale.
