Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Consider yourself LUCKY. My Delaware roo was real late crowing. He just let his first crow rip last week and he was born Nov. 2010.

He is surrounded by crowing roos. . .. AND there was a BCM hatch mate that has been crowing since 6 weeks or so. It wasn't a dominance issue either because he is in a pen with him and his girls - - - NO other roos. There are there roos in separate cages around him and they all crow.

I am thankful and have been enjoying the peace and quiet. I wish the others would take a CLUE . . .

I don't Know who is still doing the six month marans study that Geebs suggested a couple of months ago, but I have an update. . .. .

I did cull a lot of the cockerels, so my collection is smaller.

These photos were taken at 9 weeks of age. ...

Cockerel # 1

Here he is at 1 month . . .

CLEARLY a lot of changes go on in this 1 month period.

I guess I NEED to GRAB A CHEST VEIEW of this guy to show what happened to all that white . . .

BCM 6 month study - - CONT.

Cockerel # 3 at 9 weeks of age - - He is the Alpha roo. . . . The previous roo ( pink and blue bands) was bigger BEFORE the big CULL. ...
I am interested to see how the weights change during the 3rd month. I suspect Alpha roo will now become the biggest. . .. .

SNOWBIRD - - - I know you are lurking AND biting your tongue........

1.) The third cockerel, is that the brown fluff that you are always talking about that is indicative of future white feathering ? ? ?

2.) The second cockerel - - I am liking his tail angle. Are you seeing any redeeming traits in this boy ? ? I have issues with his leg feathering not being very heavy! I know the standard calls for light feathering, but I like to see it a little heavier than he has.

Lisa, yes that is the brown soft feathering that I do not like for a whole lot of reasons.

#2 I really like his overall balance and he would fit in the imaginary Box perfectly, nice long back, will be very well colored when finished. Job well done.

The brown soft feathering indicates there is something lurking that should not be there. I culled all these from my flock as you remember. Don

So, I culled 4 cockerels from the study. . . and I have 2 pullets left to look at.

Little pullet # 1- - AND the only one I guess right - - - 9 weeks old

Unfortunately, I did not track these eggs. ... So I don't know which of my girls has naughty lurking genes. I did eliminate one hen from the next couple of hatches . .. so we will see if the brown fluff shows up again!
