Chicken toe experts! My 3 month pullet got the tip of her toe (just above finger tip knuckle) pinched off in our thick coop door. The bleeding stopped, I got it wrapped and chicken isolated with everything she needs. I can't tell if the bone was injured, however it appear bruised by some slight purpling on the knuckle. How often should I be unwrapping the dressing to check on it? When do I get a vet involved? Are toes pretty quick to heal up? My instincts tell me they are :/ Thanks.

* cleaned with neosporin and rewrapped with a gauze and athletic tape.
* knuckle appears to have a little purple no significant swelling
* behavior is normal. Seems to baby the foot/lay down when eating. She does seem happier with the new lighter wrapping I did this morning.

Could you post pictures? I am not a fan of putting a dressing on toes. A crushed toe may fall off or self amputate in a few weeks. I would soak her feet daily in warm water with either Hibiclens/chlorhexidene, Betadine/povidone iodine, or Epsom salts/magnesium sulfate for about 15 minutes to promote healing. Then coat it with either plain Neosporin or Betadine. Let it dry out. Keeping her in a crate on a clean towel or puppy pad with food and water would be good for a day or two.
