I am suspecting that their study is tainted somehow. I would hate to think that my roo is only good for about a year. It takes way too long to raise and cull for a good roo to find out he only has a one year expiration date

Anyone else out there with a roo over two years old who is still doing a good job ? ? ?

Lisa, Until I downsized a couple of months ago I had several 5-7 year old males here that were still producing. I keep males and female as long as they produce what I am looking for in the young. Don

If my BC Maran, is now about 6 weeks old.. No red.. no red ever showed up on her comb,

Would she more likely be girl?? now her comb is definitely coming in but still yellow in color

I posted about her around 4 weeks old or so....

but their has been no change.

I sure hope she is a girl???

I think my hatch is over. I had to help a lot of chicks this time. I lost one BCM while it was zipping out. I also noticed a lot of them were really sticky and I don't know why. They hummidity was right.

It's very possible by the sounds of it that she is a pullet. Another picture of your chick would be fantastic...we can never see enough photos!

Jennifer Congrats on your hatch! From time to time I get a few very sticky chicks and this is because my humidity has dropped or I have my vents may need to be closed just a little or my hatching temperature is a smidge too high. Sticky chicks usually are a result of these 3 things and determining which one can be very tricky so I look at all 3 causes. I also do not try to fix all 3 causes at once....I try one thing at a time. I made a huge mistake once and thought that I could correct the sticky chick issue all at once and changed the temp, closed the vents and raised the humidity........boy o boy was that a very sad mistake.

How many ended up hatching total Jennifer?

I think I have about 6 or 7. I am not sure of the final count cause I have some barred rocks in there too. and just looking down into the brooder it is hard to count. I will try to look at them more closely when I get home today and maybe takes some pictures.

Even when the chicks start to resemble a velociraptor that has had honey drizzled over it, then dipped in feathers? My poor chick is very unfortunate looking now at 4 weeks. He/she has the beginnings of copper on the back of the neck though, which has me tickled. My existing BCM is all black with no sign of copper at all, so I'm thrilled to have one at least somewhat resemble the standard.
