Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Cute Chick! Congrats on your hatch!

The brown headed chicks happen from time to time....most likely this baby will grow out to be very mossy as an adult or overly dark and show no copper......and here's the kicker....ready.....if it's a pullet, she will most likely be one of your darkest egg layers.

LOL

I'm doing the happy dance when I get 50:50! Out of my last batch of Marans I got 50:50 and of the 5 EE's I hatched ZERO pullets. What gives?!?

I must admit I have not always gotten that lucky! The prior hatch of marans was 50/50 and the hatch prior to that was 100% male of mix breeds good thing only three hatched!

Pinkchick, -sigh- I was really hoping mine was a pullet, but when I saw it Sunday, I was really concerned that it was looking awfully rooish. My hope is almost gone. He/she is 4 weeks old, and I figure it'll be really obvious soon. You are the sexing master, and for you to confirm my fears.... oh well. I bought it from a local breeder, and she didn't guarantee gender, but implied that she'd be willing to trade if I got a roo. Plus, I accidentally took one that she'd meant to keep for herself. She'd asked if she could trade, and I said that was fine, but then she never responded to that email. Maybe I'll follow up.

I thought Wannabchick's chick looked like a pullet, but that could be my hope that MINE was a pullet. ha ha

I love seeing the new chicks. I think BCM chicks are so darling.

I'm needing advice on choosing which cockerels to keep. I have around 12 young roosters from 3-4 months old and one 9 month old rooster (all are Bev Davis/Wade Jean line). I've been waiting till now to sort them because I'm an extreme chicken newbie and decided to raise BCM.

This first photo is the 9 month old rooster that started getting white feathers at 6 months old (when I bought him at 5 months, I didn't notice white feathers and the lady who sold him didn't mention white feathers being possible) so I need to get rid of him.

This photo are a few of the cockerels who are almost 4 months old. There are a few that I see have light coloring at the base of the tail and base of the neck. Since I need to thin the flock now because I don't have room to keep them, how will I know which ones may start showing white feathers?
Also, should I ask less for the ones with lighter coloring? I was thinking of trying to get $10 up to around $20 or $25 for them - is this too cheap/expensive? (I live in Bandera, Texas - 1 hour west of San Antonio)

Also, what lines should I introduce that will improve/compliment the Bev Davis/Wade Jean lines?

If I were selling these I would sell them for food and not as possible breeder Marans. The white undercolor is one of the worst things to try and correct. I have the same problem in my Marans and I cull a lot of nice looking Marans because of the white. I believe we have to cull the female sisters to these male also. This is just what I am doing so use your own judgement. Don
