Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Hey Don!! I got some good collars on the females this year... I will post you pictures after they mature... I got a pretty head on em this time also... Nice long skulls... long backs.. Good black... My males this year.... Uh besides albury... need some more work.. It seems I have swung the pendulum a bit too far and the males are overcolored.... DRAT...

Double mating may be the only way to get the exactness required for show or just a different set of females for the male offspring than you would use for the up and coming female offspring. (but you probably already knew this)

VC, on the brahma light and Buff you are dealing with a columbian pattern and it will work different than a Brown Red pattern, I raised Brahma in very large numbers for 30 year and just recently disposed of my entire flock of Brahma. The undercolor has a lot to do with the Hackle and saddle on the brahma. Don

Okay Wynette... Maybe it is my inability to focus due to lack of sleep but what part are we talking about??? Use simple terms as I am just brain slippery today.... (one of those days)... rolling eyes

Choosing some females that will produce a good female with the cock in the flock, and choosing some females that produce good MALES with the cock in the flock, thus with each hatch from the eggs in that pen, you'd have some offspring that were good males potentials, some that were good female potentials - should have 25% good males, 25% good females....each hatch...rather than having separate pens.

I have been out of the loop for a while now... (computer crash of 2011) and other things...Life stealing away my cybertime:

Explain to me folks the theories on the hackle feathers that you are speaking and where to go to read what the French say about it... I would like to understand it more...

I know Columbian is supposed to reside in some of the birds genes... So what do you all say about that??? VC? Don??

I like the depth of his chest and his overall size, the shank color and feathering look good; do you have a side view?

On the con side, his tail angle is too high and his hackle color appears to be too light (straw) in this pic. The back might be a little short but it's hard to tell at this angle.

Here's a link to the proposed standard so you can see what to aim for..

Second edit: See the tail angle on your pretty girl on the right? Perfect Marans tail. 45 degree angle and short.

Wow thanks for the input and the link. Now I know what to look for. I bought some hatching eggs from a lady in Georgia that claims she won a first place award for her roo in the state fair, so I'm hoping for a new roo that meets the standard this year.

Not to offend any of the other breeders here, but if you want some eggs that definitely come from nice, type-y stock, get some from Wynette. Click on the website link under her avatar and try not to drool on your keyboard.

Oh, and here's a link to an Australian Marans site.. ETA: just to make my wording more clear, it's a French Marans site based in Australia

http://frenchmaransclubaustralia.yolasite.com/notes-on-breeding.php

It has lots of helpful info and pics, the BC's are about a third of the way down the page.
