Black Copper Marans discussion thread

They're both gorgeous; what great color and nice long backs! I like the one on the right the best; I can't wait to see how he fills out. The one on the left looks like the comb might be fused at the back, but it might be the angle. (What I mean by that is that the comb is supposed to sort of hang off the back of the skull a bit and the one on the left looks like it might be attached at the base. It's been a really long day and I'm wiped so the exact terminology for it escapes me at the moment.)

How are their personalities?

I just can not get ahead of all the chicken duties. . . . .
I can not even begin to comprehend the amount of work you must do with all those birds you hatch !

Since we all seem to have eggs set or hatching . . . . This seems appropriate

DON,

Dh wants to know if it is the WAFER or the Microswitch that goes bad and goes the incubators to burn up the eggs ?

Dh says that it looks like the microswitch is normally closed AND the wafer opens the switch when it heats up and expands.
So, if the wafer doesn't expand to open the switch, then the incubator would continue to heat without restrictions. . . .. .

If we replace the wafer switch set up with a digital - - - does it come preset or would we be able to control it ? ?

Thanks for any help you can provide

Lisa, most of the time it is the Wafer , but one time I did have a micro switch go out also. If you go electronics go with the switch that will adjust within a wide range. They sell one that only has a two degree adjustment and I do not like it very much. The electronics switch is easy to change and on the GQF sportsman just need to take the top off. It is prewired and has instructions included. Don

I looked in the book and the one you want is #3255

Lisa, if you have one of the Hova-bators the new model they have out has a smaller version of the electronics switch installed it is #1588 and I hear it really works great. Don

I have 2 BCM hens that is out of the Bev Davis line. I also have a Blue and 2 Wheaton Marans. In January I was hatching some shipped eggs and decided to fill the empty spot in the 'bator with some of my eggs. At that time my only roo was a light sussex. I just randomly picked eggs laid that day.

Two eggs were darker in color, like a medium color Marans egg is. Both hatched out roos. One is white with black hackle feathers like his dad and one is black with copper and some gold/orange feathering. Both have feathered feet. Only my Wheaton Marans hens have feathered feet.

I am assuming that the black roo is a Light Sussex - BCM cross.

So...Do you think he is? For a cross, how is his coloring? Would it be worthwhile to cross him back to the BCM hens or the Blue Marans hens?

He is 12 weeks old. Here are some pics of him.

Well, the BCM's are difficult to breed to type as it is, so I think you'd be setting yourself up for frustration to start out that way. On your pure girl, I like everything about her but her tail angle..and she appears to be clean-legged.
On second look she looks like she might have some mahogany mossiness but it might be the exposure of the pic.

I don't think you will find anyone on this thread that will recommend crossing him back to any marans. The marans have many issues already and bringing a KNOWN mix into the situation would not produce anything you could call a marans.

If we were going to evaluate your roo strickly by marans standards

His shanks should be . . . Dark slate color
His eyes should be . .. Orange Pumpkin
His ear coverts should be brown
His chest should be solid black
His tail angle is way too low. . . .

Not to mention that I think ( JMO) that the body shape has been altered from the shape of marans - - going by the 2nd photo.
