Lisa, since you are collecting roos I have several more that would be great additions to your collection. Can I send some EE boys too?

I gotcha VC - - - would you clearlfy something for me . . . . See my box of crayons doesn't have slate in it . ..

So is pale slate close to Dark Gray ? ? ?

Or is pale slate another way of saying light Gray ? ?

I think slate is sort of a bluish gray, as opposed to a brownish gray. Slate shanks look like this:

I think BCM pale slate isn't so uniform, but should be lighter, with more pink between the toes and scales. There is dark slate too that's darker than the white roo's shanks.

I had a young BC roo with beautiful uniformly pale slate shanks with nice feathering, but unfortunately he was a jerk, so he was consigned to the bachelor pad and was one of the casualties of the fox attack a couple weeks ago. In retrospect it was a blessing in disguise - I didn't lose anything valuable, just sentimental favorites. Helped me out of my roo collecting tendencies... which tend to come back as soon as you hatch another sweet roo.

VC - - - We are having Soup Pot for dinner tomorrow night. That is what we named the last roo that was nasty.
It would try to bite me EVERY time I would walk by.

Geebs - - -

I did chick pox and fowl pox vaccines today.
Yesterday, the girls got dipped and wormed and their saddles washed.

I didn't get to the picture taking. I might later this everning, after I finish staking some tomatoe plants

If not, I will try to do them tomorrow.

You shouldn't tease the rest of us with mention of your tomato plants and warm, sunny weather!

It is way too cold and wet to even think about stuff like that!

Don't your BC have a bluish tint to their legs? If you look up slate gray just about anywhere online, the word blue is in the description.
There is no genetic configuration for blue legs, just the same white skin + id (no dermal melanin inhibition). The melanin in the dermis is the same regardless of breed, the only difference is the amount, and the color of the skin. I think if you stripped away the darker scales you'd see that bluish color. But the ER allele allows for easier melanization so you get the darker epidermal scales and a less uniform coloring.

The dark slate, like in Ameraucanas is definitely more dark gray than dark blue, but I still think it's in the blue/gray family, rather than brown/gray.
