Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Harris5,

Look like winners to me! Wish you'd send my hens some of the copper

Nice long backs, and love the shank feathering on the third pullet. Eyes should color out correctly. How old are the girls? I'm guessing around 4-4 1/2 months?

Harris...in the next series... number one picture is my favorite... She looks just a little wider.. She has a classier head... the number two has better hackle color and number three doesn't have the 'V' shape I like to see in the tail... Minor details... Basically those are nice looking birds... Good job!!!! You still have both roosters??? Do you know which hen each bird is from??? I would try and replicate bird number one if the egg color is good.... VERY ATTRACTIVE BIRD.

I think you have got this Harris5...

It may be that Tommy's girls mature slower and width may come in later... Make notes in a file with thier pictures so that you know what you like and how to best repeat it's performance... I wouldn't wait too long... Things happen unexpectedly...do you still have rooster choice?

drumroll please... announcing my first hatchlings from my "small" pair... two of three had dye applied to their butts/bellies. I fumbled the other one and it is lost in the crowd. Hopefully some will stay small... For now, they look like normal CBM chicks.

Thanks Girls!!!

I will send some copper vibes your way Debbi! Pullet 1 is 4 months and pullets 2 & 3 are not quite 3 months old. They sure grow fast! Hopefully they will loose the random white tipped feather.

Yes, geebs, I still have 2 black coppers and 1 blue copper rooster. I have some blue and splash pullets from the blue rooster, but thought I would leave them out of this thread.

I'm growing out a few pullets from each rooster to see how their egg color is before going gang busters on feeding tons of chicks out.

I've had two go broody this year and they're both less than a year old. So I'd say they're above average for broodiness.

I have 6 broody right now (bcms hens

2 setting on bcms

1 on olive eggers

2 on cuckoos

never tried hens before will have to keep a eye out to make sure other hens dont lay in nest too

2 are in cages Should hatch 5/10

Thought I'd share my tiny BCM flock.
I hatched these from eggs I got from fellow BYC member FlashPointFarm. The odds were with me because I have (pretty sure anyway) 6 pullets and one cockerel.

Here's a closer view if the cockerel:
I really have no idea what to expect color-wise. Is it normal to have so much copper this early? They will be 5 weeks old this Thursday.
