Black Copper Marans discussion thread

I have been following this post for a while now. Recently got my first 3 BCMs and now they are just over 1 month old. Could I be so bold as to ask if you all agree with me that this little one is a roo? The other two I am pretty sure are pullets because their combs are very small and mostly black. This little one shows a lot of signs of being a roo though.

I hope the pic came through

Since the eggs are from me I can tell you egg-zactly how those beastie roo's are going to taste........YUMMY!!!!!!!!! The Marans are going to take about 6 mos. IMO to grow out for good processing weight...others may have a different opinion on this, but I grow them out to 6 mos. of age because I am also on the look out for another nice male to add to my flocks or use for breeding...so I need to wait as long as I can. The Olive egger roosters that you get will be HUGE...they are from my VERY large Blue Copper Marans male....last summer at the age of 1.5 yrs he weighed in at 12.5 lbs. I have not weighed him yet this year, but trust me, he has not been into see his friend Jenny Craig. I grew out a very nice cockerel from him a few months ago and at 4 mos of age he was ready for butcher..he was huge. The Barnies are nice meat birds but I have yet to process one so I can't tell you how the dress out. The Marans and Olive eggers will dress out nicely.

Good luck with your eggs! Look forward to hearing from you.

MYLovelyChickelets~I would say cockrel but give it a couple more weeks. One thing I look for after comb size and attitude is the spurs. I have noticed the little roos have more pronounced ones at an earlier age. I can see it already has copper on it neck so that is one indication that it is a male. But then that could also mean it might have too much red for a hen......

Will do, thank you very much! I have noticed that when I take all the chicks out to the garden to play for a while that this is the only one that watches every chick and "attacks" others if they get close to the other two BCMs. I will check for spurs in a couple weeks though also.

The eggs arrived today, and they are awesome! Huge huge huge eggs, great colors, awesome packing, fast shipping from west to east coast - Washington State to Maine couldn't be much further apart on the same continent! thanks so much! I have just set them, and now am awaiting all the fuzzies.

Yep I'd say he looks like a little roo. Some pullets will spar with each other and even with the cockerals but usually they aren't real insistant about it like the little roos are. I did have one pullet that was a evil little thing to the other birds but sweet to people.

Well, yours looks exactly like what my chick looked like at a month old. He/She/It is right about 8 weeks now. Everyone else on the board is sure it's a boy, and I'm about 70% sure. But, if you go back a few pages, MathAce is doing this 6 month study on chick growth, and at 9 weeks, the cockerels have HUGE combs and wattles. My chick's are nowhere near the size as those cockerels. However, they do seem to be a tad bigger than the pullets.

So, I figure I have one of three- options- 1 slow growing cockerel 2- fast growing pullet 3- gender confused chicken.

Because I really want mine to be a pullet, I'll call yours a pullet too, but please keep in mind I have some pretty fabulous denial going at the moment.

Now that is funny! I hope it's a gender confused pullet. I have enough roosters! Actually I have a Turken rooster, a Blue Wheaten Roo, an American Gander and a Tom. I can't have even one more male in there:( I'll join in on the delusion

It's definitely a cockerel. I know the line & how it develops.
